Codependency isn’t just about “losing yourself in a relationship.” It’s a survival strategy — often born from childhood environments where attunement, safety, or emotional permission were inconsistent or absent. In our work together, we gently unravel these patterns, not by labeling you as broken, but by honoring the intelligence of the parts that learned to over-function, over-give, and under-receive. I help clients build internal boundaries before external ones — learning to recognize where they end and others begin. Together, we practice new relational templates rooted in self-trust, emotional honesty, and reciprocity. This isn’t about becoming “independent” in a vacuum. It’s about reclaiming yourself without losing connection — perhaps for the first time.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with young adults and adults who have learned to orient themselves around other people’s needs, emotions, or expectations at the expense of their own. This can look like being the reliable one, the steady one, the person others turn to, while privately feeling depleted, unseen, or unsure where your own preferences begin. Many people I see have spent years managing relationships, smoothing conflict, or carrying more than their share because it felt safer than disappointing someone or risking disconnection. Codependent patterns often develop in situations where you had to stay attuned to others to keep the peace, where your worth was tied to being helpful or accommodating, or where expressing your own needs led to tension, withdrawal, or criticism. Over time, this can make it hard to trust your internal signals, set boundaries without guilt, or believe that your needs matter as much as anyone else’s. In our work together, we look at how these patterns formed, what they have protected you from, and how they show up in your relationships today. We make space for the part of you that learned to stay small, agreeable, or over responsible in order to feel safe, and for the part of you that is tired of doing so much emotional labor. From there, we explore what it means to move through relationships with more clarity, self‑respect, and choice, without abandoning the parts of you that have worked so hard to keep things stable. Supporting people who have organized themselves around others for a long time is central to my practice, and I have deep respect for how much you have carried.

Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapist and Coach, Certified Sexological Bodyworker, Sex Educator, Certified Reiki
So many of my clients, no matter what issue they initially come in for, have issues related to setting boundaries, communicating with their partners, and consent. I find that before doing any other work with them, I must teach them about consent, setting boundaries, and understanding relationship dynamics. In my sexuality training, I had to learn Betty Martin's Wheel of Consent, which has become the gold standard worldwide for teaching about consent. Certainly, for clients I work with around sexual issues of relationship issues, teaching the Wheel of Consent is the first step. Understanding relationship dynamics for the first time in their lives puts many clients' problems into a new perspective and often resolves their issues without having to do any other work, though we usually do just to clear any residue of past hurts and anger. We often do hypnosis focused on strengthening boundaries and building internal resources so they go forward in a stronger more positive way.

In my practice, I integrate elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help clients with codependency develop mindfulness skills and cultivate self-compassion while committing to actions that align with their values and autonomy. Additionally, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques assist clients in identifying and challenging maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors associated with codependency, promoting healthier boundaries and self-esteem. Incorporating Person-Centered Therapy principles, I provide a supportive and empathetic environment for clients to explore their emotions and experiences, empowering them to reconnect with their authentic selves and build healthier relationships.

If you notice that you tend toward people-pleasing, supporting others before yourself, experience variable levels of self-esteem based on what is happening in your life and what people say to you, and setting boundaries feels really, really hard...then it is possible that you want some support around ways of showing up that are not in your best interests.

You might be the one everyone leans on—always available, endlessly supportive, and quick to smooth things over. But underneath that strength, there’s a quiet exhaustion. Maybe you’ve spent so long tending to others that you’ve lost touch with your own voice. You may struggle to set boundaries, prioritize your own needs, or feel okay when someone else is upset. Maybe you define your worth through how much you give or help, but deep down, you’re craving space to just be… without performing, fixing, or proving. At The Momentum Practice, I help clients untangle patterns of codependency that often start early—growing up in families where your worth was tied to being helpful, agreeable, or emotionally attuned to others. These patterns can show up in adult life in all kinds of relationships: romantic partnerships, friendships, caregiving roles, family systems, and even the workplace, where over-functioning often gets mistaken for excellence. You might find yourself constantly people-pleasing, second-guessing your instincts, or feeling panicked at the thought of being left behind. They can be especially layered for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent folks who’ve had to mask parts of themselves to stay safe, loved, or accepted. We’ll explore how these ways of relating helped you survive—and how they might be keeping you stuck now. Together, we’ll work on building boundaries that feel empowering (not selfish), tuning into your own needs and desires, and letting go of the belief that your value comes from how much you give. We’ll also look at how systemic pressures may have reinforced these patterns over time. Our work might include unlearning perfectionism, quieting the inner critic, and cultivating self-trust that isn’t tied to how much you do for others. With over 15 years of experience, I offer a compassionate space to reconnect with your own voice and needs. You don’t have to keep disappearing in your relationships. Whether we’re working one-on-one or navigating these dynamics in couples therapy, you’ll have a space to explore what healthier, more mutual connection can look like. If you're ready to show up more fully for yourself and build connections that don’t come at the cost of your own well-being, I’d be honored to journey alongside you. Is most of your time spent worrying about and taking care of others? Does it feel almost impossible to share what's really on in your mind because you fear being rejected? Do you experience feelings of guilt or shame when you think about doing something just for you? If you are ready to find freedom from the feelings of guilt and shame that are holding you hostage, counseling can help. You can learn to make yourself a priority while having relationships that are nurturing and supportive. You know that you "should" be taking better care of yourself and stop letting others take advantage of your kindness. But whenever you think about it you feel lost and overwhelmed, unsure of where to begin. Together, we will work through the feelings of guilt, shame, and fear that are keeping you from being able to honor your voice. We will work through your mental/emotional blocks so you can learn to "trust your gut" again. You will learn how to create healthy boundaries in your relationships so you can say "yes" or "no" to things with confidence. If you are ready to finally become a priority in your life then I would love to help.

I have worked with codependents for many years. John Bradshaw, a popular author and leader in this field, referred to me as a “Master Therapist.” The concept of Codependency, though not included in the Diagnostic Manual, points to relationships that have become dysfunctional with one person so enmeshed in being the Caregiver (the Giver) that they enable the other (the Taker) to constantly receive without giving support and care in return. This dynamic can occur in any kind of relationship, not just romantic. Although the role of the Giver arises out of loving kindness, there is an element of attachment to being the “Rescuer” that enables the Taker to continue their dysfunctional behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, abusiveness, etc.) as the Giver inadvertently shields them from the results of their dysfunctional behaviors. If this dynamic is not interrupted, the Giver eventually becomes exhausted, frustrated and burned out, in need of the support, healing, and self-awareness provided through therapy. I offer free zoom seminars, which give you a taste of how I can help with relationship issues. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000.

Patients with this disorder are getting resilient in no time. I get their habit disorder treated by my Dicit hyptherapy and clinical hypnosis. How Hypnotherapy Treats Codependency: Hypnotherapy works to change underlying, often subconscious, beliefs such as "I am only valuable if I am helping others" or "I must fix my partner's problems".Setting Boundaries: It helps individuals establish healthy emotional boundaries and gain the confidence to say "no" without guilt. Addressing Root Causes: By relaxing the mind, therapists can access memories or traumas that triggered the codependent behavior to foster emotional healing. Building Self-Esteem: Hypnotherapy helps individuals reconnect with their own needs, interests, and identity outside of the relationship.
