Does this sound familiar? You want to feel calm and confident in social situations, but instead you are so afraid that you will look stupid or be rejected that you have started avoiding spending time with others altogether. It has been hard for you to manage this level of social isolation on your own. Each day it becomes more difficult to focus on anything other than those worst-case scenarios that your mind so quickly creates. Life doesn’t have to go on this way. Hi, I’m Dr. Jennifer McManus, and I help women find relief from social isolation. I can help you, too. Online psychotherapy is particularly helpful in the early stages of treatment for social isolation. Prolonged social isolation can deeply impact emotional regulation, cognitive well-being, and overall quality of life. Utilizing evidence-based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and behavioral activation frameworks, I help individuals identify and dismantle the cognitive distortions—such as fear of rejection or hypervigilance to social threats—that maintain isolation loops. Our clinical work focuses on safely rebuilding social stamina, overcoming loneliness, and establishing structured, meaningful avenues for community reintegration.

Feeling disconnected from others can be one of the most painful human experiences. Maybe you’re struggling to find meaningful relationships, or you feel like you don’t quite belong anywhere. Perhaps you've withdrawn due to past hurts, anxiety, or life circumstances, and now the idea of reconnecting feels overwhelming or even impossible. Loneliness can creep in slowly or hit all at once, leaving you feeling invisible, misunderstood, or unsure of how to reach out.
You don’t have to navigate this alone. Together, we’ll explore the barriers keeping you isolated—whether it’s fear, self-doubt, or uncertainty about where to start—and work toward creating connections that feel fulfilling and safe. Meaningful relationships aren’t just about having people around you; they’re about feeling truly seen and valued. You deserve that, and it’s never too late to take the first step toward connection.

Josh Murray- Hopeful Minds
Psychologist, MA, LLP
Social isolation occurs when a person actively removes themselves from social interactions. For people suffering from social isolation, their primary goal is to spend time alone. Mostly they prefer to spend time away from people. When a person is physically isolated, they may live in a remote area or work in a job where they are alone for much of their day.
Becoming socially isolated is a choice a person makes when they no longer want to spend time with others. It’s important to note the differences between spending time alone and being socially isolated. We all need time to think, read, relax, or unwind in solitude. Time alone can help a person slow down from the fast pace of life and can be revitalizing and recharge. Many enjoy their own company and are comfortable alone and in social settings. For people with social isolation issues, however, there is a different reason why they need to be alone.
Part of social isolation occurs when a person lacks social relationships. People may stay home for long periods when socially isolated before leaving the house. They may go days without speaking to anyone else. People who struggle with social isolation lack the desire to form meaningful, long-term relationships. If you prefer social isolation, you will go to great lengths to avoid relationships and interactions with others, making them as brief as possible without having to engage in lengthy conversations.
Social isolation is not a condition on its own; however, it may be a symptom of a more significant problem like a mental illness. With social isolation, a person loses pleasure in going out, and what they once enjoyed turns to stress, worry, fear, and anxiety. Social interaction becomes something dreaded instead of what they look forward to. Social isolation can hurt your relationships and may drive friends and family away the more you refuse to join them in social settings.
Therapy can help people who are afraid to interact with others overcome their fear of interacting with others.

I specialize in helping adolescents and adults overcome social isolation and build meaningful, fulfilling connections with others.
