Robert Good

Counselor/Therapist, M.A., Th.M., LPC, CART
Individual counseling is offered to individuals in helping them achieve control over actions through an understanding of how thoughts, feelings, and decisions produce actions. We provide a safe environment where one’s private pain can be shared in confidence with a trained therapist to grow in self-awareness and self-esteem while helping a person make decisions, solve problems, and overcome past and present abuses and pains. Sometimes when negative memories prohibit an individual from enjoying a satisfying life, issues in one’s family of origin can be explored to understand the past and seek to establish a new identity. Feelings like fear, sorrow, anger, rejection, and loneliness can lessen as self-acceptance and coping skills are encouraged and strengthened.

When my identity becomes wrapped up in what my partner thinks about me, I find myself in the codependant position. It becomes hard for me or my partner to feel anything because our feelings are so triggering to each other. If we were both healthy my partner could have a bad day or a bad mood and I could be fine. But when I am codependent, I need my partner to be happy all the time because if they mad, sad, or bad, it means there is something wrong with me and now I am in an identity crisis. If you can relate to this, reach out to us, we can help you engage principles of relational intelligence in your life that will support your emotional stability and relational well being.

Codependency usually means a difficulty in being a separate person. It can be hard to disagree and have your own inner experiences that are separate from a close person. It becomes clearer when we recognize that we struggle with: putting others’ needs ahead of your own, setting boundaries, or feel responsible for how others feel. Over time, this can lead to resentment, burnout, or a loss of your sense of self. Therapy focuses on helping you reconnect with your own needs, develop healthier boundaries, and build relationships that feel more balanced and sustainable.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Carrie Gauthier, hypnotherapist
Codependency

Carrie Gauthier

Hypnotherapist, Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist, CCHt
We often use hypnotherapy and other related frameworks to explore the emotions, beliefs, and relationships related to the codependency/attachment style. This often centers around themes of self-worth, abandonment, neglect and betrayal and the childhood regression is a real cataltyst to faciliate healing for codependency issues. We get back in touch with the root cause and give that inner child a chance to finally authentically express the words and emotions long held back. And with it, is a release of energy blocks and the path to peace is revealed. With new clarity and wisdom, you will move forward without the need to continue attaching yourself to unhealthy relationships that mirror what happened to you in childhood, because we have closed the loop and released what needed to go. That is where the shift comes and we continue installing the new hardare in that will hardwire your mind to bring in only what is the new, evolved emotional frequency and match, of an unconditional love of self first and then a match to someone who is on the same level as you.

Relationships can develop circular patterns of mutual hostility and dependency that keep both parties frustrated and emotionally impoverished for a long time. I try to understand the emotional patterns that each partner originally brought to the situation, penetrate those patterns with empathy and understanding, and support each person's wish to be freer and stronger and happier.

I approach codependency not as a flaw or diagnosis, but as a set of learned relational strategies shaped by attachment, trauma, and survival. Many people who identify with codependent patterns are deeply attuned, responsible, and caring—often at the expense of their own needs. In therapy, we gently explore how these patterns developed, what they have protected, and how they may no longer be serving you. Our work focuses on building awareness, strengthening boundaries, and increasing self-trust while honoring your desire for connection. Through a trauma-informed and relational approach, we work to untangle obligation from care, guilt from responsibility, and self-worth from over-functioning. Therapy becomes a space to practice new ways of relating—ones that allow for closeness without self-abandonment and support relationships that feel mutual, grounded, and sustainable.

The concept of Co-Dependency was developed as a way of explaining how family members of alcoholics, especially their spouses, became emotionally ill apparently as a result of living with an alcoholic for years. "Co" is a prefix that means "like" or "with" - the family member becomes sick like and with "the dependent" (the person dependent on a chemical). There are several common problems that often go along with life with an alcoholic or drug abuser, including their unpredictable moods, selfish and irresponsible behavior, angry outbursts which may include verbal or physical abuse, broken promises and commitments, embarrassing public behavior, financial irresponsibility, legal problems, and inability to return love or affection. However, most chemically dependent people have periods when they function well, and this generates the hope that they will stay well, quit or control their chemical use, and become responsible and loving for good.

Codependency and people-pleasing can be an adaptation to the environment in which we grew up. Understanding that our own needs are our legitimate concern, and setting boundaries so that these needs are met, is necessary to prevent burnout.

You might be the one everyone leans on—always available, endlessly supportive, and quick to smooth things over. But underneath that strength, there’s a quiet exhaustion. Maybe you’ve spent so long tending to others that you’ve lost touch with your own voice. You may struggle to set boundaries, prioritize your own needs, or feel okay when someone else is upset. Maybe you define your worth through how much you give or help, but deep down, you’re craving space to just be… without performing, fixing, or proving. At The Momentum Practice, I help clients untangle patterns of codependency that often start early—growing up in families where your worth was tied to being helpful, agreeable, or emotionally attuned to others. These patterns can show up in adult life in all kinds of relationships: romantic partnerships, friendships, caregiving roles, family systems, and even the workplace, where over-functioning often gets mistaken for excellence. You might find yourself constantly people-pleasing, second-guessing your instincts, or feeling panicked at the thought of being left behind. They can be especially layered for LGBTQ+ and neurodivergent folks who’ve had to mask parts of themselves to stay safe, loved, or accepted. We’ll explore how these ways of relating helped you survive—and how they might be keeping you stuck now. Together, we’ll work on building boundaries that feel empowering (not selfish), tuning into your own needs and desires, and letting go of the belief that your value comes from how much you give. We’ll also look at how systemic pressures may have reinforced these patterns over time. Our work might include unlearning perfectionism, quieting the inner critic, and cultivating self-trust that isn’t tied to how much you do for others. With over 15 years of experience, I offer a compassionate space to reconnect with your own voice and needs. You don’t have to keep disappearing in your relationships. Whether we’re working one-on-one or navigating these dynamics in couples therapy, you’ll have a space to explore what healthier, more mutual connection can look like. If you're ready to show up more fully for yourself and build connections that don’t come at the cost of your own well-being, I’d be honored to journey alongside you. Contact me for a free 15 minute consultation!

Codependency is what happens when you've learned that love requires self-erasure. When taking care of others feels safer than having needs of your own. When saying no feels like a threat to the relationship. At Simple Empathy we use IFS and Narrative Therapy to help you understand where that pattern came from, which parts of you maintain it, and what it would look like to be in relationship without losing yourself in the process. This work is direct and sometimes uncomfortable. It's also some of the most freeing work a person can do.

Codependency is a learned pattern of interacting. We can unlearn these patterns, too. First we are going to identify the needs and learn more accurate self talk around self-esteem and self-worth. We will talk about triggers that might cause you to fall back into old patterns and ways to act with love, but not entangled in someone else's distress.
