Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Chronic Pain

Dr. Adam Shafer (Chicago, IL)

Psychologist, Psy. D., M.A.
Managing chronic pain and illness exhausts many of the social and personal resources we have just to get through the day. Feelings of isolation and being alone in this struggle are insidious and can take away from our ability to remain connected to others and within ourselves. Whether it is not wanting to burden others with our struggle or feelings of hopelessness, people need to know (and feel) that they are valuable enough to continue to be cared for while also provided with space through encouragement that honors our autonomy.

Hypnotherapy for Chronic Pain & Illness: Find Relief, Restore Balance Living with chronic pain or illness can feel exhausting, frustrating, and at times, overwhelming. When pain takes over, it can impact not only your body but also your mind, emotions, and overall well-being. But what if you could train your mind to experience relief, comfort, and control? Hypnotherapy is a powerful, natural approach that works with your subconscious mind to reduce pain perception, manage stress, and support healing. Through guided hypnosis, you can: ✔ Ease Physical Discomfort – Retrain the brain’s response to pain and tension. ✔ Promote Relaxation & Healing – Reduce stress and enhance the body's natural ability to heal. ✔ Regain Control Over Your Experience – Feel empowered instead of powerless over pain. ✔ Improve Sleep & Energy Levels – Break the cycle of pain, fatigue, and stress. Pain is not just physical—it has a mental and emotional component, too. By addressing it at all levels, hypnotherapy can help you experience greater relief, resilience, and peace. Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with people whose lives have been shaped by their bodies in ways they did not choose. This may include serious or long‑term illness, chronic pain, complex diagnoses or diagnostic uncertainty, and the lingering impact of medical procedures and hospitalizations. For some, there is also medical trauma or other trauma woven in. For others, the ongoing symptoms themselves are what feel overwhelming. Many of the adults, teens, and children I see look like they are managing from the outside. They keep up with school, work, or family responsibilities and often minimize what they are going through. Inside, there may be fear, grief, anger, exhaustion, or a sense of watching life move on without them. I often work with people who are trying to navigate medical, school, or workplace systems that feel unsupportive, confusing, or exhausting, and to live a life that makes sense when very few people seem to understand what it is really like. My work is not general support for illness. I focus on how pain, illness, and medical experiences live in the nervous system and shape mood, relationships, daily life, and sense of self. We make space for the very real impact of ongoing pain or fatigue, adjusting to new diagnoses or changes in functioning, repeated medical procedures or hospital stays, encounters with dismissive or disbelieving providers, and the losses and changes that come with a life that is different from what was expected. Together, we work with your body’s responses to what has happened, the stress of navigating care and systems, and the question of how to move forward in a way that feels possible for you. Supporting people whose lives have been shaped by illness and pain is central to my practice, and I have deep respect for how much you carry that others often cannot see.
