Every relationship goes through seasons — and some of those seasons are hard. Communication breakdowns, unresolved conflict, trust issues, and emotional distance can leave even the most loving couples feeling disconnected. I'm here to help you and your partner rebuild connection, communicate with greater understanding, and create a relationship that feels safe, loving, and strong.

My work with gay men in relationships provides a safe, affirming space to strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and deepen emotional and physical intimacy. I understand the unique challenges gay couples may face, including navigating non-traditional relationship structures, healing after infidelity, or addressing sexual concerns. Drawing from the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and sex therapy, I help partners improve communication, resolve conflict, and reconnect with one another. Together, we’ll explore how attachment styles and family histories shape your relationship patterns and learn new ways to relate with empathy and understanding. Whether rebuilding trust after betrayal or simply wanting to feel closer, my goal is to help you and your partner create a stronger, more fulfilling connection—both emotionally and physically.

It's hard and it hurts to struggle in relationships. We can feel so alone even though we are living with someone. Developing more effective ways to communicate, understanding ourselves and our partners better, and more, are all possible in couples work. I spent several years training to do this work and am a certified couples/marital therapist. I incorporate psychodynamic therapy techniques as well as Gottman and EFT approaches in my work with couples.

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

For over 40 years I have specialized in relationship therapy. I have deepened my expertise in relationship therapy through certification in Imago Therapy, developed by Dr. Harville Hendrix. Communications training is central to the work I do with couples. As you learn to communicate more effectively, you establish an atmosphere of safety and trust where you can resolve conflicts, release past hurts and replace animosity with goodwill, compassion and love. We work to identify and transform destructive relationship patterns into patterns that work for both of you, so you enjoy a more loving, satisfying relationship.

Relationships are just as challenging as they are beautiful. Even the best relationships require work, consistency, and a space to explore different thoughts, perceptions, and experiences. In couples counseling, we will work to gain an understanding of each individual, identifying their key needs, desires, and challenges. Through communication skill-building, Emotionally Focused Therapy, conflict resolution skill-building, and more, we help couples navigate the ebbs and flows of relationships, assisting them in reaching a place of greater intimacy, collaboration, and satisfaction in their relationship.

I provide relationship and marriage counseling from a trauma-informed, systemic, and strengths-based perspective. I work with couples and partners to improve communication, navigate conflict, and deepen connection, while honoring each person’s individuality and life context. Therapy is a collaborative space to explore patterns, build relational skills, and strengthen trust and intimacy. I have experience supporting traditional, queer, and ethically non-monogamous relationships, recognizing that each relationship has its own structure, needs, and challenges. Our work may focus on boundaries, negotiation, attachment dynamics, healing from relational trauma, and fostering shared meaning.
