Lenny Gallo

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW
OCD is more than just liking things neat and organized. It’s a serious and often misunderstood condition that can be incredibly disruptive to your daily life. For many people, OCD can interfere with work, relationships, and everyday routines—and it’s not something you can just “turn off.” OCD affects people of all ages and walks of life. It often shows up as unwanted, intrusive thoughts (called obsessions) that can feel scary, upsetting, or out of your control. People can have unwanted sexual thoughts, thoughts of harming others, fears about relationships, and contamination, to name a few. To cope, you might feel driven to do certain behaviors or rituals (compulsions) in an effort to quiet those thoughts. Unfortunately, this creates a cycle that can leave you feeling exhausted, isolated, and overwhelmed. OCD doesn’t always look the same. It can also show up in related ways, such as: Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) – Obsessive thoughts about perceived flaws in appearance Skin Picking (Excoriation Disorder) – Repeated picking at the skin, often causing injury Hair Pulling (Trichotillomania) – Compulsive pulling out of hair from the scalp, eyebrows, or other areas My approach to treating OCD is rooted in the evidence-based methods of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP is considered the gold standard for OCD treatment. Together, these approaches help you face fears in a safe, supportive way—so you can break free from the cycle of obsessions and compulsions. I am a part a part of the International OCD Foundation's Therapist Network and have been trained in ERP through the organization. To find out more about OCD, Click here. Side Note: OCD and PTSD (TRAUMA) About 19% of people with OCD also have a history of trauma. The research in this area is still evolving, and the truth is we don't have the best methods for treating both. Some of the strategies that are highly effective for OCD might not be appropriate for someone actively struggling with PTSD, and vice versa. Currently, Prolonged Exposure (PE) is considered the gold standard for treating PTSD. That said, some individuals don't respond well to that. Others respond well to approaches like EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) or IFS (Internal Family Systems). If you’re dealing with both OCD and trauma, we’ll work together to determine the best path forward—one that’s safe, effective, and tailored to your unique needs. PLEASE NOTE: Some treatment for OCD will be unconventional. In some cases, I may require house visits and family participation, but be assured that all treatment related to OCD is always in the interest of helping you manage unwanted thoughts and rituals.

Denver, Colorado therapist: Ryan Ramsey, licensed professional counselor
OCD

Ryan Ramsey

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
Being authentic matters to me. I show up as a real person in the therapy room, and I want you to feel like you can do the same. My goal is to create a space where you can be yourself, open up, and unpack everything you’ve been carrying: the stress, the thoughts you keep to yourself, the experiences you’ve been through, and all the stuff life has handed you. When people feel safe enough to be honest and real, that’s when therapy really helps. I’m informal, down-to-earth, and easy to talk to. I believe that the relationship between us is far more important than any technique or theory. When you feel comfortable, understood, and really seen, you’re more likely to take risks, speak your truth, and make real changes. That said, I do bring strong clinical training when it’s useful. I have advanced training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy from the Albert Ellis Institute in New York. REBT is one tool in my toolbox and something we can use to help you understand and challenge your thoughts, shift unhelpful patterns, and create new ways of responding to stress, relationships, and life in general. But therapy with me isn’t rigid or overly structured. It’s a conversation. It’s two humans sitting down, figuring things out together. If you’re motivated to change, to feel better, to understand yourself more deeply, or to get clearer about where you want your life to go, I can help you.

I use exposure therapy to help clients with OCD gradually face feared thoughts, situations, or sensations while learning to resist compulsive responses. The process is collaborative and carefully paced, helping clients build tolerance for uncertainty and reduce the power OCD has over daily life. Over time, exposure therapy supports lasting relief by teaching the brain that anxiety can be experienced without giving in to compulsions.

Is OCD putting a strain on your relationship? You’re not alone. Think of OCD as a relentless bully, constantly dictating how you should act—or else. But this bully doesn’t just target you; it infiltrates your relationship, too. Your partner may feel pressured to follow certain behaviors dictated by OCD, and over time, that pressure can turn into frustration or resentment. When your partner pushes back, it might feel like hostility toward you. Now, you’re not only struggling with intrusive thoughts and anxiety but also the pain of feeling unsupported or blamed in your relationship. If this is your experience, working with a couple therapist that fully understands the nature of OCD is essential. Couple therapy can help you and your partner to develop a shared understanding of how to best respond when OCD shows up, so that you are united in taking a stand against this bully, rather than letting it come between you.

Dealing with patients who have anxiety and OCD is an important part of the work I have done historically and currently. Depending on what kind of OCD they have and whether I need to work with another physician or specialist will determine the kind of work we do together. But getting a client to be aware of what they do, the compulsions they feel and practicing certain alternative ways of managing are crucial.

Living with OCD often feels like a lifelong search for a certainty that never arrives. No matter how many times you try to answer a 'what-if' thought, ignore a fear, or seek reassurance, the urge always demands more. In our work together, I help you break these anxiety-driven patterns using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)—a practical, evidence-based approach that helps you stay in the driver's seat. Through a mix of education, skills building and proven theraputic models, I walk alongside you as you learn to navigate the very uncertainty that at times feels impossible to handle. We don’t just talk about the cycle; we work together to change your response to it in real-time. Step by step, you’ll learn to make space for the unknown, reclaiming your time and energy to build a life that feels much bigger and freer than the one OCD has allowed you.
