Dr. Stéphanie Gamache, PhD
Hypnotherapist, PhD
Impulse control difficulties often reflect internal conflict, unmet emotional needs, and patterns of self-regulation formed early in life. My work integrates psychoanalytic methods and hypnosis to explore the emotional meanings beneath impulsive behavior. Together, we develop greater awareness, agency, and emotional regulation.

Marjan Emami
Counsellor/Therapist, MD, RTC #3608, MPCC-Provisional #4797, ACTA #3122
Impulse control disorders often stem from trauma, unmet needs, or difficulties with emotional regulation. In therapy, I provide a safe, supportive space for clients to explore impulses without judgment. Through co-regulation and expanding the window of tolerance, impulses gradually soften, helping clients experience them without acting on them and develop greater self-awareness and control.

Kaimana Psychology Inc.
Psychologist, BA, MACP, Registered Psychologist
My approach to working with impulse control difficulties focuses on understanding the role that control plays in a person’s sense of safety and security. For many individuals, the need to control situations, outcomes, or even their own emotional responses can become a way of managing uncertainty and reducing discomfort. But how much control do we truly have, and when does the pursuit of it begin to limit us rather than protect us? Therapy focuses on recognizing when control is no longer serving the client, while building greater flexibility in thinking, emotional awareness, and the ability to tolerate uncertainty. Together, we work toward moving away from rigid, all-or-nothing perspectives and embracing the gray areas where multiple possibilities can exist. By learning to pause, consider alternative responses, and become more comfortable with the unexpected, clients can begin to make choices that are intentional rather than driven by an urge to regain control. Sometimes, letting go creates opportunities we never would have considered otherwise, whether that means discovering an incredible new restaurant we would never have chosen ourselves or allowing a coworker to introduce a new process that makes our day-to-day life easier. My goal is to help clients recognize that flexibility does not mean losing control of their lives; it means developing the confidence to navigate life without needing to control every outcome. Through this process, clients can build resilience, improve decision-making, and become more open to the opportunities that arise when they allow life to unfold.

Impulse control is a big topic that encompasses many things such as binge eating, anger management issues, drug and alcohol abuse, self harm, anxiety, and much more. All are the result of emotional triggers that set off the behavior and often the client doesn't realize what initiates the negative response. The first thing is to uncover exactly what it is that triggers the problem behavior and then neutralize the trigger or provide a positive trigger in its place. Often, simply understanding what starts the unwanted response goes a long way towards change. This is, again, one of the bread and butter issues that hypnotherapists successfully deal with every day.c
