Calgary, Alberta therapist: Daniel Klassen, psychologist
Domestic Abuse

Daniel Klassen

Psychologist, Provisional, (P7619) with CAP in Alberta & Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC 19147) with BCACC, for elsewhere in Canada
Domestic abuse and violence are tragically more common than many realize—and far more common than they should be. It often begins subtly, when one person in a close relationship becomes frustrated or emotionally unsettled, and begins to mistreat the other. At first, the behavior might seem minor—cutting remarks, dismissive tones, or small acts of disrespect. But when left unaddressed, these behaviors can intensify, growing more damaging over time. Abuse tends to follow a disturbing pattern: pain and frustration in the more powerful individual are often displaced onto the less powerful, creating a cycle of harm marked by confusion, fear, anger, and diminishing well-being for everyone involved. If this cycle continues unchecked, it can escalate into serious physical and emotional abuse—and in the most extreme cases, even torture or death. Daniel experienced this firsthand. As a youth, he was an innocent bystander in his own home, where unresolved anger and violence ultimately led to his hospitalization. From that experience, he came to understand the madness and tragedy of this cycle—how it is fueled by unprocessed emotional pain and the absence of healthy intervention. Today, Daniel dedicates himself to helping others break free from the chaos. Through his work, he seeks to unravel the pain and confusion at the heart of abuse, foster understanding, and guide individuals and families toward healing, freedom, and the possibility of a safer, more compassionate future.

We believe you and it's not your fault. Let's start with this because it's important. Regardless of whether you call it domestic abuse, domestic violence, or interpersonal violence, this form of trauma and abuse can occur in the context of romantic or family relationships and can include physical, emotional, and sexual abuse. The effects of this form of abuse can have seriously implications on a survivor's mental and physical health. Common effects are depression, anxiety, addiction, PTSD and Complex PTSD as well as injury, chronic pain, and disability. If left untreated, these difficulties will not resolve and often survivors will notice that they continue to experience patterns of abuse in future relationships. You might not believe that it is possible to get help and for things to improve. Domestic abuse does not have to be a life sentence - at New Moon Psychotherapy we work extensively with survivors of domestic violence and are trained in evidence based therapies to help you recover. These therapies include: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Prolonged Exposure (PE), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy for PTSD (DBT-PTSD), Sensimotor Psychotherapy, Somatic Psychotherapy. We will work with you at any stage that you're at and whatever situation you're in - if you are still in the abusive situation and do not want to leave or are contemplating leaving, if you have recently left or have been away from the abuse for a while. We promise not to judge, to work with you at your pace, and to tailor your treatment plan to your needs. Ottawa, Ontario therapist: Barbara Freedman, licensed mental health counselor
Domestic Abuse

Barbara Freedman

Licensed Mental Health Counsellor
I have successfully worked with well over one hundred Victim Service clients as a Mental Health Worker /Counsellor. Most of these clients were victims of domestic violence. Leaving such a relationship often involves a mourning process. I have provided safety, along with education and awareness involving the difficulties in leaving such a relationship. Many victims of domestic violence are in denial or do not recognize the behavior as abuse , as normal is what we live. These challenges involve perceived or real fear of retaliation or further harm, in addition to the economic reasons of financial or housing dependence on the abuser. Self blame particularly cultural or family pressures leads to internalized oppression and discourages speaking out. Their fear of not being. believed or being judged is among the most common reason that victims suffer in silence. For those sustaining the pain of domestic abuse I provide an understanding of this process in addition to offering these clients ,guidance, resources as well as the self agency to be able to achieve freedom from this mistreatment.
