Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex and often misunderstood condition, characterized by emotional instability, impulsive behaviors, and significant challenges in interpersonal relationships. These emotional fluctuations can leave you feeling in a constant state of dysregulation, affecting your thoughts, moods, and behaviors. My approach to working with BPD is informed by Internal Family Systems (IFS), where we explore the different emotional parts that emerge in order to better understand their origins and purposes. Given the complexity and stigma surrounding BPD, it's essential to explore the underlying factors contributing to your experience, including early childhood relationships and current relational patterns. Together, we will work toward gradually rebuilding your sense of self and addressing any confusion about your view of self and your view of others. Book a free 15-minute consultation with me to see if I’m the right fit for you.

The BPD and Trauma Connection Several trauma survivors have been diagnosed by other professionals with BPD , even though it is thought to be genetic in some cases. I have had extensive experience dealing with those who have been affected by this disorder due to the abuse or neglect they sustained during childhood. As a Mental Health Worker/Counsellor, on Ottawa's Victim Quick Response List for the past 9 years, I have successfully worked with over hundreds of Victim Service clients, in such areas as, child abuse, sexual trauma and exploitation including rape, incest, being sex trafficked, along with intimate partner violence. Individuals with BPD reflect an attachment injury leading them to the formulation of implausible perceptions and conclusions about what other people’s actions and behaviors. Their distorted fashion of interpretation leads them to believe that they cannot trust anyone as this would only involve disappointment. As a child, when their caregiver did not show up for them, they tried desperately to adapt repeatedly, however were unsuccessful and learned that this involves too much energy and does not work. They continue to experience life as a child, as they have been left with these intense perspectives and overwhelming emotions which are turned up to maximum volume on much of what they feel. When these states become traits, they cause profound distress. Rejection sensitivity is a key feature of this disorder resulting in interpersonal difficulties, along with failed relationships characterized by extreme feelings of emptiness, abandonment, and lack of identity. All these behaviors further lead to the tendency for those around them to feel that they are walking on eggshells. I often used both experiential inner child work in addition to Dialectical Behavior Skills to address the issues involved in this disorder. The role of counselling for those with BPD is to start to uncover painful emotional wounds and feelings which they have disconnected from for years. Rather than sitting with and experiencing their feelings clients with BPD have been experts in covering, hiding, or dissociating from them. Interventions involving DBT-Dialectic Behavior Therapy includes skills training connected to Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation(Anger management), and Distress Tolerance, which is comprised of stress management, conflict resolution as well as cognitive behavior therapy. While it has taken considerable time, I have helped many with this process through patience, understanding and validation of what they had been through. I help to provide light at the end of this dark tunnel .

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Angela Fawcett, counselor/therapist
BPD

Angela Fawcett

Counsellor/Therapist, BSW, MSW, RSW
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most misunderstood mental health diagnoses, yet it is also highly treatable. People living with BPD often experience emotions intensely, making the world feel overwhelming and relationships feel confusing, dysregulating, or even frightening. Beneath these struggles is often a deep longing for connection, stability, and understanding. I draw on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based approaches to help clients build skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, self-compassion, and healthier relationship patterns. With the right support, people can learn to regulate emotions, build secure relationships, strengthen their sense of self, and create meaningful, fulfilling lives. Recovery is possible, and many individuals with BPD experience significant healing and lasting change.

Calgary, Alberta therapist: Daniel Klassen, psychologist
BPD

Daniel Klassen

Psychologist, Provisional, (P7619) with CAP in Alberta & Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC 19147) with BCACC, for elsewhere in Canada
Living with borderline personality disorder (BPD) can be profoundly challenging. Those affected often endure intense emotional turbulence, unstable relationships, and a fragile or shifting sense of self. Rapid mood swings, impulsivity, and self-destructive behaviors frequently disrupt their personal lives, creating cycles of conflict and emotional pain. Many individuals with BPD grapple with chronic feelings of emptiness, an overwhelming fear of abandonment, and a distorted self-image that makes it difficult to trust themselves or others. Managing BPD requires more than willpower—it demands compassionate support, a strong therapeutic alliance, and the development of effective coping strategies. This often includes a combination of therapy, skill-building, and, when appropriate, medication. With the right treatment and support, people with BPD can gain greater emotional stability and go on to lead meaningful, connected lives. Daniel understands this journey intimately. Several of his close family members live with BPD, giving him deep personal insight into both the daily struggles individuals face and the emotional toll it takes on their loved ones. His empathy, grounded in experience, informs his commitment to helping others navigate the complexities of this condition with respect, patience, and hope. Daniel offers both brief screening for borderline personality disorder (BPD) and comprehensive, customized assessments that evaluate a wide range of personality disorders, trauma, and commonly co-occurring concerns. He welcomes inquiries regarding this and other psychological testing services he provides.
