Can chronic pain get better?
Yes! Our brain changes and adapt throughout our lifetime (i.e., this is called neuroplasticity). Habits are essentially strengthened roads or pathways when we repeatedly do or feel or think in the same way. When we continue to travel the same road or pathway, we strengthen the habit. When we form a new habit, we make new connections and old pathways are used less/weakened. The more we travel the pathway, the more our thoughts, feelings, and behaviours become second nature (e.g., like brushing teeth).
In chronic pain, the nervous system and brain have changed due to neuroplasticity in an unhelpful way. The good news is that we all have the ability to learn and change by rewiring our brain.
Join our clinicians to participate in our 10-session Mind-Body Connection program designed to teach you strategies to manage chronic pain. Meet Laura, our awesome physiotherapist who can also provide additional strategies.
Some of our coaches have:
• Helped to start one of the largest pediatric chronic pain programs at a children’s hospital in Ontario
• Currently also at hospital chronic pain clinics
• Completed dissertation projects on chronic pain and are actively involved in ongoing research
• Hold leadership positions on regional and national chronic pain committees
• Hold academic appointments at well respected universities in which they teach and supervise trainees in the field of chronic pain
• Start psychosocial oncology programs in hospitals

Therapist, Registered Psychotherapist, RP, BA, Dipl. Psych.
I work with individuals living with chronic pain or illness by exploring the emotional and relational dimensions of their experience. Using a psychodynamic approach, we uncover how past wounds, unspoken emotions, and unconscious patterns may influence how the body holds stress and experiences pain. Together, we create space for healing that honors both the physical and emotional realities of your experience.

Anna Skomorovskaia (Sky)
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, MSW, RSW, Psychotherapist
I chose to work with chronic pain because I recognize the significant impact it can have on a person's quality of life. Chronic pain is a complex and often debilitating condition that can cause physical, emotional, and social challenges. It can also lead to anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. I believe that by addressing the emotional and psychological aspects of chronic pain, individuals can better manage their symptoms and improve their overall well-being. Through therapy, I work collaboratively with my clients to learn the roots of difficulties, explore their thoughts and feelings about chronic pain and develop coping strategies to manage their symptoms. I am committed to providing a supportive and compassionate space where my clients can feel heard and understood, and I am dedicated to helping them improve their quality of life.

Living with chronic pain, chronic illness, or persistent symptoms can affect more than your body. It can change how you work, sleep, relate to others, and imagine your future. Other people may see you functioning without realizing what it costs you afterward, while you feel exhausted, isolated, or worn down by living in a body you can no longer fully trust. Therapy cannot erase the physical realities you face. It can give you a place to process what your health has changed, navigate uncertainty, strengthen your ability to cope, and build a life that feels more manageable and meaningful. Toronto is one of the most multicultural cities in the world, and its therapy landscape reflects this extraordinary diversity, with practitioners representing hundreds of cultural backgrounds and dozens of languages. The city's high cost of living and intensely competitive professional environment drive demand for therapists addressing financial anxiety, burnout, and the psychological pressures of ambitious urban life. CAMH — the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health — is Canada's largest mental health and addiction teaching hospital, providing major institutional resources alongside Toronto's vast private practice and counselling community. Ontario's OHIP coverage is limited for psychotherapy, so many residents use extended health benefits or pay out of pocket to access private therapy.
