Alexandria, Virginia therapist: Kathryn Ziemer, psychologist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Kathryn Ziemer

Psychologist, PhD
Every relationship has its challenges. Sometimes it takes an outside person to help you and your partner work through these challenges in an empathic and objective way. I use techniques that have been proven to work. Together, we will create a trusting and safe environment where you and your partner can talk openly about the issues that divide you. I don’t take sides or place blame. Instead, I work to understand each of you as individuals and as a couple. Our work will focus on building better communication skills, having more positive experiences as a couple, and coping more effectively with challenges. Together, you and your partner can build a stronger relationship.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. Here is a list of them. 1) Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? 2) It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." 3) Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy.Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too).

Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Jonathan Schmalz

Psychologist, PhD, HSP-P
Relationships are central to knowing who we are and thus have an enormous impact on our mental health. We often downplay to ourselves that frequent or underlying problems in our relationships are "enough" to feel anxious, sad, or angry about. As a result we often misplace the source of distress solely upon personal failings. Much of my work focuses on helping you clarify what you want and need relationally, working out what is making it hard to communicate those wants and needs, and empowering you to try some new things with your loved ones.

Austin, Texas therapist: Norma J. Perez, psychologist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Norma J. Perez

Psychologist, PhD
I have been married over 40 years so I can tell you, relationships are hard but so worth it. I love working with couples to help them realize what really is normal and messy and how to navigate normal and messy. I will listen to you and your partner describe what each of you see as an issue, then hear your examples and teach each of you how you can approach the situation differently to give you a better outcome. Couples come in thinking they are going to tell me everything that is wrong with their partner and to fix them. I help individuals realize how their own actions can change the outcome. Once everyone focuses on doing their own work, then they see the desired outcome in the relationship. It sounds uncomfortable, but it's really a lot of fun and we laugh a lot.

Abington, Pennsylvania therapist: HUGH R STEWART III, hypnotherapist
Relationship and Marriage Counseling

HUGH R STEWART III

Hypnotherapist, Ph.D., ACHt.
One of my specialties is communication. This is crucial in any relationship, and, especially in romantic committed relationships. I teach the Imago way of communication which forces people to listen rather than being triggered and formulating a response when your partner is still speaking. If you are going back and forth escalating during an argument, neither one of you is listening. It becomes all about each of you being right. Do you want to be right or happy because you cant have both, CHOOSE! Everybody has a different experience of what reality is and neither is correct, especially when your past is clouding your present in your unconscious. I will teach you how to communicate in a healthy manner so you can both get into the other persons world so you can validate and empathize with their experience.
