Seattle, Washington therapist: Melanie Carey, counselor/therapist
Stress

Melanie Carey

Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA
Stress often builds gradually until it becomes a constant background state — feeling overwhelmed, emotionally stretched, mentally overactive, or unable to fully rest even when there is space to do so. Many people describe feeling like they are always “on,” managing responsibilities, emotions, and expectations without enough internal recovery time. In therapy, we explore both the external pressures contributing to stress and the internal patterns that shape how you respond to it. From a psychodynamic and trauma-informed perspective, chronic stress is often connected to long-standing roles such as over-functioning, caretaking, perfectionism, or difficulty setting boundaries. Rather than focusing only on stress management techniques, this work also helps you understand what your nervous system is communicating through stress symptoms. Often, stress is a signal of unmet needs, accumulated emotional load, or disconnection from internal pacing and limits. Using Focusing-Oriented Psychotherapy, we slow down enough to notice the body-based experience of stress; the tightness, urgency, fatigue, or shutdown, and begin to relate to it with awareness rather than override it. This allows space for regulation and new internal choices to emerge. Over time, clients often experience greater capacity to rest, clearer boundaries, and a more sustainable rhythm in daily life.

Everyone at one point or another will experience stress in their daily lives. How we manage stress can impact our daily lives and overall health. Sometimes all it takes to take back control over our life stressors is having someone walk alongside of us and suggest new approaches to managing the stress. I know from experience the toll that stress and burnout can take on your well-being, and how difficult it can be to even imagine realistic change. If you're feeling burned out, we'll take a step back and look at your values - the important parts of your life that bring you meaning. Then we'll examine where there might be a mismatch and find areas where there might be potential for change. This could involve increasing your engagement in other activities that fulfill you, removing yourself from a situation or environment that depletes you, strategically engaging with your support network, or other strategies that fit your personal experience. I don't take big decisions lightly, and if considering a major change we'll check in throughout to ensure the steps you're taking are value-consistent and take into account the full context of your needs.

Stress

Louise Perry

Registered Psychotherapist, IFS UKCP HCCP BAAT
I work with adults experiencing ongoing stress, including feeling overextended, pressured, or caught in persistent states of alertness and responsibility. Stress often develops as a response to competing demands, long-standing expectations, and internal pressures, rather than as a single problem to be solved. My work draws on Integrative Art Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), offering ways to explore how stress is organised internally and what responses it triggers over time. Rather than focusing on stress management techniques, sessions centre on understanding the patterns, beliefs, and roles that keep stress in place. We may work through conversation, creative exploration, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most useful.

Stress doesn’t always follow the rules—it shows up in productivity crashes at work, emotional overloads at home, or misalignment in relationships. At my practice, I work with minds that don’t always “fit in the box,” helping you translate intensity, deep processing, or divergent focus into practical strategies. Together, we’ll build tools you can use under pressure—so that your thinking style becomes a resource, not an obstacle, across every area of your life.

Tacoma, Washington therapist: Tacoma Wellness Collective, licensed clinical social worker
Stress

Tacoma Wellness Collective

Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Stress has a way of becoming the baseline. You adapt to it, build your life around it, and eventually stop noticing how much you're carrying — until your body reminds you. The tension headaches. The sleep that doesn't restore. The short fuse you don't recognize in yourself. The feeling that you're always one thing away from the edge. At TWC, we help adults understand what's driving the stress beneath the surface — not just the circumstances, but the beliefs, patterns, and nervous system responses that keep the pressure running even when life slows down. Because managing stress and understanding it are two very different things. We're interested in the latter. You deserve more than coping. You deserve a life that doesn't require constant management just to get through. When you're ready, we're here.
