Most of us experience loss at some point in our lives. We can experience loss of so many things, a loved one, divorce, finances, employment, relationships and even a sense of ourselves as a result of trauma, illness or abuse. It is never easy, but if we give ourselves time to process our grief and can move through our pain with self compassion and kindness, it can make our healing a little better. When you feel ready to reach out for some support and counselling, I would be honoured to walk a little of your healing journey with you.

Loss and Grief can be completely debilitating. It takes tremendous energy to cope with loosing someone or something that you were attached to. Did you know that we expect a significant loss to take upwards of 1 year to recover from. If it's been longer than a year it's time to look into what else may be preventing you from moving forward in your life.

Lincoln Stoller

Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, CHt, CCPCP
I have a warrior's approach to loss: if a risk was taken for a righteous purpose, then the loss is righteous too. And "righteous" doesn't mean profitable or beneficial, it means virtuous and formative. We should all be willing to risk our lives to make our lives better. The only alternative is to live unfulfilled lives, and fail to act in ways that help others live. A loss of opportunity is worth grieving over, especially if the opportunity was not taken. But another person's decision to embrace or forfeit opportunity is something only they can be responsible for. Much like love, the most you can do is offer. You can do no more, but you must do that. The way you deal with grief is to recognize what other things you should be grieving about now; what opportunities you're missing and the failures of those you love to recognize their opportunities. There are things everyone should do while we have the chance. If you failed to do before what you now regret, then your grief is telling you what to change. Look at those around you and ask yourself if they are living lives free of regret. Become both an advocate for and actor in what you think is missing. If others disagree or don't want to hear you, don't let that stop you. Grief tells you to become an evangelist for what is most important; values as deep as your feelings of grief. When you act on those feelings, there is nothing for you to regret when loss occurs, and loss always occurs. Look at past losses as messages that have finally gotten through. Become a valuable actor in the lives of those you care about. Teach others that grief is regret over opportunities lost. Your future grief will be much less if you do the most in the present. I am a counselor with the American Alpine Club's Climbers Grief Fund. The fund offers US$600 grants to those suffering as the result of wilderness related trauma. You do not need to be a member of the American Alpine Club, and there is no cost in applying for the grant.
