Men’s Issues

Shane Smyth

Registered Psychotherapist, MA, RP, OACCPP
Working with men from a non shaming and supportive approach has been very rewarding for me and has resulted in many of the male clients I work with having an increased sense of self acceptance and understanding. Men have lots of work to do in today's society to ensure the future is one where love and acceptance are nurtured. Getting support from a male therapist who is doing his own work around masculinity can be helpful.

Men’s Issues

Registered Social Worker, MSW, RSW
Men's issues encompass a range of challenges related to masculinity, societal expectations, and personal well-being. Seeking support from a female therapist for men's issues can be a beneficial and constructive experience. A skilled and empathetic female therapist can offer a unique perspective, fostering a safe and non-judgmental space for men to explore their emotions, relationships, and societal pressures. In therapy, discussions may focus on navigating traditional gender roles, communication styles, and the impact of societal expectations on mental health. The therapeutic relationship, characterized by trust and understanding, can empower men to address vulnerabilities, cultivate self-awareness, and develop effective coping strategies. Choosing a female therapist for men's issues underscores the importance of diversity in therapeutic approaches, challenging stereotypes, and promoting inclusivity in mental health support.

Counsellor/Therapist, Registered Social Worker (RSW), Certified ADHD Coach (AACC)
I work with many men in my practice. Men are believed to be far less likely to seek help than women but I believe that is changing. We socialize men to avoid their emotions and this certainly has an impact in how they understand their own, and other people's feelings. Understandably, this has a negative impact on men's relationships. The role of men in society has shifted significantly in recent years. The example their father's generation provided for them no longer fits as a framework. Men struggle to make sense of the messages they grew up with, integrate them with today's world, yet struggle to process emotions and manage relationships. If they have ASD, ADHD, or mental health issues in addition to these social factors, it can make it that much more complex. It helps to view men from a holistic lense, including all of the various factors that may influence their life.

I know how difficult it can be to hold in your feelings and emotions as a man because, for centuries, men have been socially conditioned to remain stoic and not be emotional. It can be difficult to open up about your feelings to the other men in your life or sometimes even your family members due to a fear of judgment or a lack of emotional connection. I promise to provide a non-judgemental space where we can explore those feelings that we guys oftentimes bottle up and neglect. I know reaching out can be the hardest part, but I promise you it's worth it.

Whiteboard Counselling

Registered Psychotherapist, RP
When dealing with men’s issues in therapy, it is important for therapists to address the unique concerns which men face. This involves creating an environment where men feel safe and valued as they make positive change. All too often male clients can feel judged for their stances in therapy as opposed to feeling heard, valued and understood. At our clinic we take a proactive approach to providing support for male clients and have helped hundreds of men find peace along life's journey.
