Low self-esteem often stems from old emotional patterns and body-held messages about safety and worth. I help clients rewire these patterns by combining insight work with nervous-system grounding. Over time, you develop a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Tehmina Ayana Meherali
Counsellor/Therapist, M.Ed, CCC, CMHP
I support individuals who feel held back by self-doubt, harsh self-criticism, or a deep sense of not being enough. When self-esteem is low, it can impact relationships, choices, and the ability to fully trust yourself.
Our work together focuses on helping you reconnect with your inherent worth, quiet the inner critic, and build a stronger, more compassionate relationship with yourself.

Low self-esteem can affect many areas of your life including school, work, and relationships. When you lack self-worth, you feel low and down about yourself as if you’re not good enough. When you lack self-efficacy, you think you are incapable of doing things successfully. In our sessions together we will work on your negative beliefs about yourself to help you see all the great qualities you truly possess as well as build qualities that you desire. I believe in you, and together we can work on growing your self-love and confidence.

Self esteem refers to our sense of self; being aware of what our values are, and living accordingly. It includes acting with integrity and authenticity and taking responsibility for our lives despite what may have happened to us; if we have had difficult experiences it means being aware of the self-critical mind and replacing it with self compassion; ie being kind to yourself. You can refer to Kristen Neff’s work on self compassion or Chris Germer’s; there is also 5 minutes self compassion breaks on you tube you can refer to when things get hard; be kind, cut yourself some slack and take some chances in life; that’s important.

Self-esteem refers to the perception and evaluation of one’s own worth or value. It plays a crucial role in how we approach life, relationships, and challenges. A healthy self-esteem fosters confidence, resilience, and a positive mindset, enabling individuals to pursue their goals and face obstacles with determination. On the other hand, low self-esteem can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety, and negativity, impacting both personal and professional aspects of life. Building self-esteem involves self-reflection, setting realistic goals, celebrating achievements, and practicing self-compassion. Surrounding yourself with supportive people and engaging in activities that bring joy can also enhance self-worth. Remember, cultivating a positive self-image is a journey that takes time and effort, but it can lead to a more fulfilling and empowered life.

Lori Ralko
Licensed Clinical Social Worker, M.A., RSW
Recently, I was watching a video clip of Brene Brown, the renowned social worker and shame researcher. She talked about empathy as the antidote to shame. Whereas shame that is hidden is permitted to grow and thrive, shame that is shared with an understanding and empathic ear has the opportunity to transform. My hope is that if you're struggling with negative feelings about yourself, you'll be able to share your thoughts and feelings with me when you feel safe to do so.

My approach, relational therapy, sees self-esteem as shaped by our experiences with others. How we're treated in relationships, past and present, deeply effects how we feel about ourselves. You don't need to have traumatic experiences to have impacted your self esteem; sometimes well-meaning and loving relationships still don't happen give us what we needed to be more positively connected to ourselves. How we're valued or not in society also matters: even if we know they're wrong, experiences of discrimination and prejudice can become internalized, leaving a mark on our self-image. I'll work with you to try to understand the unique relational world you carry, and what experiences of connection, love, validation, and acceptance you may need to support a better self esteem. My hope is that you leave therapy with new narratives, feeling more empowered and compassionate towards yourself.
Some of my clients want to revisit and reprocess past, impactful experiences that haunt their self-image. Others would rather focus on present experiences—how do self esteem issues come up in daily life now? How are they feeling in the session? Some want to explicitly discuss issues of internalized racism, sexism, transphobia, ableism, homophobia, etc. Others may not think through an identity lens, and that's okay too! My approach is client-led, so I'm always flexible to whether or not, and how deeply, you want to discuss something. So much of therapy is about finding your authentic voice, and my process always seeks to honour that.
