Berry Didier Nibogora - Bilingual CBT therapist @ CMAP Health

Counsellor/Therapist, RP(Q), CCPA, LLM
Feeling sad, demotivated, low energy and uninterested in activities you use to enjoy are the hallmarks of a depressed mood and depression remain the leading cause of disability. My approach to helping those experiencing depression is to start from outside to inside. By doing manageable tasks, one activity at the time, those struggling with depression progressively get back in contact with rewards. By doing what gives you pleasure or is important for you, according to your values and where you want to be in life, while pausing and celebrating milestones and achievements, you will get better. This is hard in the first days as depressive symptoms keeps the affected person down and demotivated. I am clear with my clients, right from the very beginning: do not fall in the trap that you will start doing something when you get motivation. It does not work that way and sleeping in or sitting on your couch because you feel demotivated is an avoidance strategy that will be feeding in your depression. Most clients start with behavioural activation strategies/principles first before doing the cognitive work of changing the unhelpful thinking or rumination that equally feed into the spiral depressive whole. Make no mistake: what you do or not do impact on the situation you are facing. If you decide to get started doing something small, you will feel different and the more you engage in mood boosting activities, the more you enjoy them and start to see the world and yourself with positive lenses. Should your clinical depression turns out to be treatment-resistant, ketamine-assisted psychotherapy will be an in-house option for you once you go through screening and assessment.

When a dark cloud has descended and life feels unbearable, it can be so challenging. Sometimes, life can seem so difficult and sadness, guilt, shame and worry can overwhelm us, The good news is that so much can be learned about lifting that dark cloud and watching it float away! Together, we will explore the roots of your depression. I will utilize CBT strategies, person-centred, kind and empathic listening and develop an understanding of the roots of the depression before employing typical CBT strategies of identifying avoidance, structuring daily plans and encouraging behavioral activation. I will teach you how to feel truly relaxed and begin to enjoy life again. Congratulations on deciding to make changes and welcome.
