Divorce, separations, and breakups can disrupt the nervous system (the same areas of the brain involved in withdrawal from substances are activated) and undermine your sense of identity, leaving you feeling lost, aimless, physically feeling sick, and overwhelmed by grief. I assist clients in navigating the emotional, relational, routine shifts, and physical stress associated with these significant and often very painful transitions. Our work promotes clarity, self-trust, hope, and the gradual rebuilding of a grounded future at your own pace and a gentle nudging from me.

Victoria Lorient-Faibish

Registered Psychotherapist, MEd, RP, CCC, RPE
I am someone who believes in marriage. I myself have been in a successful twenty-five-plus-year marriage. I believe that it is possible to have a healthy, happy and passionate marriage. Even though statistics today indicate the state of the institution of marriage is rocky, I am hopeful. I believe that very often those who end up heading down the divorce road do so because they do not have the tools to navigate the sometimes rough waters of marriage. People get bored and don’t have the emotional discipline to hang in there. Also the advent of children is a challenge to a marriage. I observe that people don’t have the tools to cope with that. People play out their family-culture dysfunction without knowing they are doing so. People have addictions and aren’t getting help. People are codependent, enabling, overworked, exhausted, impatient, irritable, blame-oriented, feeling like the victim and living from their hurt-child perspective. In therapy we try to leave no stone unturned regarding working on a rocky relationship. But if the couple, after lots of work decide that they can no longer be together, some amazing couples work can be done to have a healthy, peaceful divorce with minimal scar tissue done to themselves and their children.

Toronto, Ontario therapist: Marjan Emami, counselor/therapist

Marjan Emami

Counsellor/Therapist, MD, RTC #3608, MPCC-Provisional #4797, ACTA #3122
Relationships often fail because partners bring unmet childhood needs for validation and safety into the connection, expecting the other to fulfill them. In my work, I help clients explore these underlying patterns and take responsibility for their own emotional experiences, including past wounds and triggers. This process supports moving out of cycles of blame or victimhood and toward greater self-awareness, clarity, and more conscious ways of relating.

Divorce is a deeply emotional journey that involves the legal termination of a marriage, marking a significant moment in your life. It often brings a wave of challenges—emotionally, financially, and logistically. As you navigate this difficult process, it's completely natural to experience feelings of loss, grief, and uncertainty about what lies ahead. Every divorce is unique, influenced by various factors such as the length of your marriage, whether children are involved, and the dynamics between you and your partner. During this time, open and compassionate communication can be incredibly helpful. A willingness to cooperate, especially concerning co-parenting responsibilities and shared assets, can ease the transition for everyone involved. Remember, you don’t have to go through this alone. Leaning on friends, family, or professional counselors can provide much-needed support, guidance, and encouragement as you adapt to the changes in your life. While this process may feel overwhelming, it’s important to recognize that divorce can also open doors for personal growth and new opportunities for happiness and fulfillment in the future. You have the strength to move forward and create a bright new chapter for yourself.
