Couples Therapy or Marriage Counseling?

You finally decide you want help with your relationship.

Then another question gets in the way:

Do we need couples therapy or marriage counseling?

If you’re married, you can go to couples therapy.

If you’re not married, you don’t need to wait until you are.

And neither service is reserved for couples on the edge of a breakup.

I work with couples who fight constantly and couples who rarely fight at all.

Some feel more like roommates.

Some can’t talk about money without an argument.

Some are trying to recover after an affair.

Some love each other very much, but one person keeps pushing for connection while the other keeps pulling away.

Others come in saying:

“Nothing is terribly wrong. We just don’t feel like us anymore.”

Those can all be reasons to start couples therapy.

The terminology isn’t where I’d spend most of my attention.

I’d look at the therapist.

Does this person actually specialize in couples?

What kind of couples training do they have?

Do they regularly work with the issue that brought you in?

If there’s been an affair, that matters.

If ADHD or autism is affecting the relationship, that matters.

If intimacy has disappeared and neither of you knows how to talk about it anymore, tell the therapist that.

You don’t need to find the perfect search term before asking for help.
