As we move into the heart of spring, May brings more than just blooming flowers and warmer weather. It is also Mental Health Awareness Month. While it’s wonderful to see the world light up with green ribbons and social media posts advocating for well-being, true mental health care happens in the quiet, consistent moments of our daily lives.
One of the most effective ways to stay on top of your well-being is by conducting a monthly mental health “review.” Just as a business analyzes its monthly performance or a student reviews their progress, we can benefit immensely from taking a dedicated hour to look inward.
Here is why a May check-in is vital and a step-by-step guide on how to conduct your own review.
Why a Monthly Review Matters
Life moves fast. We often spend our days reacting to demands—work emails, family needs, and social obligations—without pausing to see how these stressors are affecting us. Before we know it, we’re feeling burnt out, irritable, or disconnected.
A monthly review serves as a “course correction.” It allows you to:
- Identify Patterns: You might notice that your anxiety spikes on Sunday nights or that you feel most energized after a specific hobby.
- Prevent Burnout: Catching exhaustion early allows you to adjust your schedule before you hit a wall.
- Celebrate Wins: We often forget the small hurdles we’ve overcome; a review forces you to acknowledge your resilience.
The Step-by-Step Mental Health Review
1. Set the Scene
You cannot do a mental health review while scrolling through TikTok or waiting in the carpool lane. This process requires a “sacred” space. Clear 30 to 60 minutes. Grab a journal, a cup of tea, or your favorite pens. Make sure you are in a comfortable environment where you won’t be interrupted.
2. The Calendar Audit
Start with the “facts” of the past month. Open your digital or paper calendar and look through May.
- How many social events did you attend?
- How many late nights did you work?
- How many days did you spend outside?
Oftentimes, our “bad moods” are actually just responses to an over-scheduled calendar. Seeing it on paper helps you realize, “Of course I’m tired; I haven’t had a Saturday at home in three weeks.”
3. The “Energy Audit”
Once you’ve looked at the calendar, assign an energy value to your major activities.
- Energy Givers: What made you feel alive, calm, or capable? (e.g., a walk with a friend, finishing a project, meditation).
- Energy Takers: What left you feeling drained, anxious, or resentful? (e.g., a specific toxic conversation, overcommitting to a volunteer role).
4. Ask the Deep Questions
Now, move from the data to your feelings. Use these four prompts to guide your reflection:
- What was my “baseline” mood this month? (Were you generally “fine,” or did you feel like you were operating under a cloud of irritability?)
- What was my biggest stressor, and did I handle it the way I wanted to?
- How did I show up for myself? (Did you keep your boundaries? Did you prioritize sleep? Did you speak to yourself with kindness?)
- What am I carrying into June that I need to let go of?
Turning Reflection into Action
Knowledge is only half the battle. The final part of your May check-in is making a plan for June. Based on your review, choose one small adjustment for the month ahead.
If your “Energy Audit” showed that you are drained by constant notifications, your June goal might be a “Digital Sunset” where you turn off your phone at 8:00 PM. If you realized you haven’t moved your body much, your goal might be three 15-minute walks per week.
When a Review Isn’t Enough
Sometimes, an honest mental health review shows us that we are carrying more than we can handle alone. You might find that your “Energy Takers” are overwhelming or that your “baseline mood” has been low for too long. If you feel stuck in a cycle of anxiety, burnout, or spiritual exhaustion, you don’t have to navigate the path to healing by yourself.
At Restoring You Christian Counseling, we believe in providing a supportive space where you can process your thoughts and find the restoration you deserve.
