Making sense of trauma, and the impact of trauma, can be accompanied by the fear that you will never be able to overcome the distress you feel when you remember the experience or when those intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, and negative thoughts come crashing into your awareness. Through trauma-focused therapy we reclaim confidence, hopefulness, intimacy, safety, self-esteem, and trust. I have specific expertise in treating trauma symptoms related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse, military sexual trauma (MST), childhood and complex sexual trauma, violence, and combat trauma experienced by Veterans. These experiences can impact physical health, and daily life. Many people will experience a form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can come with feelings of shame, anger, and confusion. Posttraumatic stress is a normal human reaction to traumatic events. However, for some individuals this stress persists and interferes with their ability to live the life that they want. I work with complex cases that sometimes include dissociation, numbness, anger, risky behaviors, and years of avoidance. The treatments I provide are the most powerful and effective treatments available for these conditions. I have expertise in individual, as well as relationship (i.e., with a partner) based trauma-focused therapies. I have experienced many times how these treatments help people gain new perspectives about what happened to them, develop a sense of empowerment over their trauma, and improve their lives. These treatments can also be helpful if you feel stuck following experiences of trauma, even if you don’t have PTSD. If you’re unsure whether you want to discuss your trauma, or unsure which approach feels like a good fit for you, we can discuss your concerns. We will explore trauma-focused care that builds upon your current support, coping skills, and personal experience. I primarily employ time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) such as CPT, PE, and CBCT. (See Individual and Couples Therapy based Trauma-Focused Services.) In psychological literature, stressors are defined as events and conditions (e.g., losing a job, death of an intimate partner) that cause change and require that the individual adapt to the new situation or life circumstance. Stress processes can include the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing your authentic self, internalized homophobia, intimate partner violence, discrimination, and ameliorative coping processes that have become bad, ineffective habits. These experiences can be particularly painful when there is social pressure to conceal your experiences, or stigma. I address what it’s like to have no one to talk to about these experiences, and any distress that comes from having nowhere to do this work safely. I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy that considers the impact of minority stress and chronic stress responses. Aside from these stress processes, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and heterosexuals who report any same-sex sexual partners over their lifetime, have greater risk of childhood maltreatment, interpersonal violence, trauma to a close friend or relative, and unexpected death of someone close.

Trauma can leave deep emotional scars, affecting how we see ourselves, others, and the world around us. Whether it’s the impact of past abuse, a difficult childhood, or a life-changing event, unresolved trauma can shape your thoughts, behaviors, and relationships in ways that feel hard to overcome. In our work together, I’ll provide a safe, supportive space to explore and heal from your past experiences. Through trauma-informed techniques, we’ll address the emotional and physical effects of trauma, helping you process, release, and rebuild. My goal is to empower you to reclaim your strength, build healthier coping strategies, and move toward a life of healing, peace, and resilience. You don’t have to carry the weight of trauma alone—healing is possible, and you deserve to feel whole again.

Trauma can feel so overwhelming. It has a way of infecting every area of one's life. In my work with those who experience trauma I take a collaborative approach where we assess and address the trauma from all angles. We use talk therapy to process what has gone unaddressed and discover together the meaning made and the effect it had on you in your relationship with yourself and others. I also use evidence-based practices like EMDR and TF-CBT (Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral) Therapy which allows us to address cognitive distortions and negative beliefs you hold about yourself so that you can overcome the pain and suffering and experience more joy and freedom.

Embark on an extraordinary journey of courageous healing, transforming the echoes of traumatic experiences into the seeds of profound growth and empowerment. Trauma, with its overwhelming and paralyzing presence, holds within it an unexpected doorway to personal development when met with wisdom and the proper support. Unfortunately, many find themselves grappling with the disorienting and immobilizing effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms. With the honour of guiding thousands through the intricate process of understanding and methodically healing trauma, I cultivate a therapeutic environment that is more than just safe—it's infused with positivity, warmth, and, when appropriate, a touch of fun. While the path to healing trauma may seem daunting, the journey carries immense benefits for those who bravely confront it with wisdom and robust support systems. Personally, navigating a significant amount of childhood trauma has equipped me with a profound understanding, coupled with over two decades of professional experience, totalling more than 17 thousand hours of sitting with clients in my psychotherapy practice. Today, I draw from this rich tapestry of personal and professional wisdom to extend hope and support to those on their unique path toward a future marked by more significant health and happiness. Within you lies transformative potential, akin to emerging "superpowers," waiting to be harnessed as you navigate the intricate healing process. If you're ready to face this challenge with courage and embrace the support you deserve, I wholeheartedly invite you to a consultation. Together, let's chart a course toward a future defined by resilience, growth, and the profound realization of your full potential.

I work with trauma from body and soul perspectives. By drawing upon somatic modalities, we will explore how your nervous system responded to traumatic events and work towards reintegrating the experience from a more regulated and spacious place. From a soul perspective, trauma can be understood as not having the love, support, and sense of being witnessed when a traumatic experience occurred. Together we will tend to your body and soul so that you are no longer at the mercy of trauma.

Trauma and PTSD are so incredibly common and underrecognized. People often go decades in their lives with undiagnosed PTSD and trauma without even realizing it. It is important to unveil the traumatic experiences we have gone through in our lives. Some people can experience trauma and not develop PTSD. However, there are many people who experience trauma and don't recognize they have. I am here to work with you through that. I can provide you a safe place to explore the traumatic experiences that are causing you pain, and we can begin to get your life back in order, one piece at a time.

CPT helps people recognize how trauma has changed their view about themselves, others, and the world. CPT teaches people to recognize the negative thoughts that are created by the trauma. These thoughts are called "stuck points" in CPT because they keep people stuck and get in the way of recovery from PTSD (from the National Center for PTSD (.gov))
