Anger can be a difficult emotion for many people - you may have received messages throughout your life about what is or isn't "okay" to feel, or you may feel at a loss of how to navigate the strong waves of anger when it hits. We work on understanding the role and function of anger, while working to reshape any messages that may be keeping you stuck. Building comfort and flexibility with anger is all about building our awareness of our cues; reshaping our relationship with anger; growing our regulation skills; and practicing how we can let our anger inform how we choose to respond, rather than being driven by the anger itself.

I often refer to these feelings as the "Itchy Bitchies." Anger is a healthy emotion that is often overlooked. However, many of us never learned how to use it as an ally or develop positive coping skills. It's important to recognize the difference between the feeling of anger itself and our reactions or responses to it. Thankfully, these reactions can be learned and rewired!

I work on emotional management in general and anger management in particular. Managing anger is challenging in part because anger has a lot of energy in it. It takes skill and practice to direct that energy in a way that is productive rather than destructive.

Seattle, Washington therapist: Aaron Kapin, somatic experiencing practitioner
Anger Management

Aaron Kapin

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
While there are often mental components to anger you'll want to address with a talk therapist, there's also a physical component that we can work on using somatic approaches: Out of control anger is often your nervous system's "fight" response kicking in so intensely that it's hard to keep your cool. Anger serves an important purpose, but we want to know that we can still stay connected to our best selves even while we are angry. We can use body-focused techniques to be able to recognize when anger is about to kick in, and to teach your body new ways of responding to that anger. For example, you may find yourself saying to me "I noticed I was getting hot and agitated, so I excused myself for a couple minutes." You may find yourself able to focus your energy much more quickly than you used to, to come back focused and goal oriented. You may still feel 'mad' but it may be anger that is working for you, in alignment with your values.

Saint Louis, Missouri therapist: Chris Scarberry, licensed professional counselor
Anger Management

Chris Scarberry

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA, LPC
I do evidenced-based work informed by CBT and DBT modalities. As mental health professionals, we find that many of the difficulties people face with managing anger have to do with the relationship between thoughts/feelings and behavior. It is necessary to look at what other emotions anger masks, and work on becoming more mindful of one's physical evidence of becoming angry so that different choices can be made sooner once one becomes visibly angry. Often, I meet with people who feel out of control in their lives and become angry when they are also hurt by the way they are treated by others. Sometimes, people were not allowed to sit with or express their feelings as a child and this leads to their not knowing what they are feeling at all, or they try to numb anger with substances or other compulsive behavior. When I work with clients on anger management, I always have them start with tracking their angry thoughts and branch out from here since that tells us what their underlying beliefs and fears are, whether the anger is directed inward or outward, and what purpose allowing themselves to be socially inappropriate with the anger may serve in accomplishing often unconscious goals or social outcomes.

Resilient Mind Integrative Therapy, PLLC

Psychologist, Psy.D.
Anger is a natural and important emotion, but when it feels constant, explosive, or hard to control, it can leave you feeling guilty, misunderstood, or disconnected from others. Often, anger masks deeper emotions like hurt, fear, or depression. In therapy, we’ll explore the underlying sources of your anger and the patterns that keep it alive. You’ll learn tools to recognize triggers, calm your body’s stress response, express needs more effectively, and respond rather than react. Over time, this work can help you feel more in control, improve relationships, and channel your emotions in ways that promote understanding, balance, and self-respect.

When you have an Anger Management issue, the smallest thing can set you off. You are always on the defensive, feeling that everyone is out to get you, and those around you fear your outbursts. You, and your loved ones, do not have to live this way any longer. Some signs that you may have an Anger Management issue are: You are constantly angry You are always on the defensive Every little annoyance makes you mad You become verbally or physically aggressive when angry You are unable to control your outbursts Among other techniques, our trained therapists will work with you, using Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) strategies. These strategies will help you identify irrational, destructive thoughts or beliefs that are driving your anger and reframe them in a rational and positive way. Our goal is to help you recognize when you are becoming angry, take action to calm down and to manage situation differently. We do not want to eliminate your anger, as this is a normal and healthy human emotion, but to have you express your thoughts and feelings is a more positive and constructive way.

In my practice, I help patients with anger management issues by utilizing a comprehensive and personalized approach tailored to their unique needs. I begin with a thorough assessment to understand the root causes of their anger and its impact on their lives. Education is provided to help patients recognize the triggers and physiological signs of anger. Therapies such as Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) are employed to address negative thought patterns and develop healthier responses to anger-inducing situations. Mindfulness and relaxation techniques are taught to enhance self-awareness and emotional regulation. I also offer strategies for effective communication and conflict resolution to help patients express their feelings constructively. Ongoing support and follow-up ensure continuous progress and adjustment of therapeutic strategies. This comprehensive approach aims to empower patients to manage their anger effectively, improve their relationships, and lead more balanced lives.
