MN Couples & Family Therapy

Psychologist, Ph.D., L.P.
My specialty is in marriage and family therapy. I have been fortunate to be trained by some of the best professors and trainers in the field. I am trained in the Gottman Method including being a Bringing Baby Home educator, and 7 Principles for Making Marriage Work educator. Additionally, I have completed training in using Gottman Method in infidelity and PTSD. I have also completed certification training in Discernment Counseling through the Doherty Institute. I am trained in PREPARE/Enrich. I work with couples throughout the entire relationship spectrum from premarital counseling, to established couples needing assistance, to parenting challenges and including divorce/uncoupling therapy if necessary. I am not marriage neutral and prefer to help couples create mutually satisfying relationships wherever possible. I have additional training and expertise in working with ADHD couples, understanding the unique issues commonly found in relationships where one or both partners has ADHD.

Maria T. Alonso, Ph.D.

As a psychotherapist, I incorporate structural family therapy to work with couples by focusing on the underlying structures and dynamics within their relationship. This approach allows us to identify and address patterns that may be causing conflict or dissatisfaction. I help couples map out their current relational patterns, including boundaries and roles, and work together to reorganize these structures in a way that promotes healthier interactions. Through structured interventions, we explore how these dynamics impact their connection and communication. My goal is to empower couples to establish more effective and balanced ways of relating to one another, enhancing their overall relationship satisfaction and fostering a more supportive and cohesive partnership.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Relationships

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it. I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it? It is better to be close than it is to be “right.” Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong." Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

Relationships are special and take considerable work. It doesn't matter if you are seeking a therapist to help you early in your relationship before "stuff happens" or are trying to back up and address longer standing patterns, I can help you be a strong "Us". When working with relationships we are going to talk about ways to make you a team and help you improve the ways you talk with each other to increase your understanding. The Gottman's talk about "Masters" and "Disasters" - I can help you be the former.

Relationships can feel especially challenging when your brain works in ways that don’t quite match what others expect. At Dr. Shoup’s practice, you’ll find a therapeutic space built around how you think: full of empathy, structure, and insight. Because we understand how intense focus, rapid associations, or lingering disconnects impact connection, we tailor couples and relational work to translate misunderstandings into deeper understanding, and build communication strategies that really work for your unique style. With support built around your perspective, you can move from friction and confusion toward connection and clarity.

Every relationship has its unique dynamics, and sometimes patterns emerge that lead to disconnection, misunderstanding, or recurring conflict. In marital and relationship therapy, I provide a safe and structured environment for partners to explore these dynamics. We will collaboratively uncover the underlying needs and perspectives of each individual, fostering greater compassion and effective communication. The aim is to move beyond reactivity, build stronger bridges of understanding, and empower you to co-create a relationship built on mutual respect, trust, and shared growth.

By the time they show up in my virtual office, many neurodiverse couples have had previous couple therapy experiences that did not go well, and are feeling increasingly stuck and hopeless about reconnecting in their relationship. If you are navigating ADHD, Autism, OCD, or other forms of neurodivergence in your relationship, you need an experienced couple therapist with a profound understanding of both the strengths and challenges of having brain-based differences, and how these differences can impact communication, energy management, nervous system activation, intimacy, and more. I would love to help you chart a different path for your neurodiverse relationship that allows you to interact with greater ease and connect more authentically.

Jacob Hamlin

Marriage and Family Therapist, M.Ed., LMFT, CST
Relationships can become painful when couples get stuck in repeating patterns: pursue and withdraw, criticize and defend, shut down and explode, long for closeness and then protect against it. My work with couples focuses on understanding the cycle beneath the conflict, improving communication, rebuilding emotional safety, and helping partners speak more honestly about hurt, desire, resentment, trust, and hope. I help couples slow the conversation down enough to hear what is really happening underneath the argument. Whether you are trying to reconnect, make an important decision, or repair years of distance, therapy can offer a more intentional path forward.

Marriage & Family Counseling Who needs marriage counseling? There's an expression "the whole is greater than the sum of the parts". Healthy individuals make up healthy families. One individual in the family affects other parts of the family - just as one affected part of our body can affect the other parts of our body. Marriage and family therapy helps to sort through the many issues families struggle with. With so much chaos and struggle happening outside of the home, it is so important that the home be stable, safe and a "sanctuary." Does that mean perfect? No, there are no perfect families, no perfect moms, dads, brothers or sisters. Struggles and conflicts in families are normal... while families aren't perfect they can learn, grow and heal from any hurts created. There may be a need to deal with conflict in new ways, and better understand one another. Siblings may fight and compete with one another. Spouses may struggle with shared parenting roles. Someone may feel like the black sheep or sense that treatment is favored toward one child or not strict enough for another. Marriage problems are part of life. It is a comfort to have an unbiased objective third person in marriage counseling and family counseling to coach and encourage new patterns and different ways to work through differences. Start counseling soon and experience healthier happier relationships.
