Bethesda, Maryland therapist: Dr. Patricia Webbink, psychologist
Codependency

Dr. Patricia Webbink

Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
I have worked with codependents for many years. John Bradshaw, a popular author and leader in this field, referred to me as a “Master Therapist.” The concept of Codependency, though not included in the Diagnostic Manual, points to relationships that have become dysfunctional with one person so enmeshed in being the Caregiver (the Giver) that they enable the other (the Taker) to constantly receive without giving support and care in return. This dynamic can occur in any kind of relationship, not just romantic. Although the role of the Giver arises out of loving kindness, there is an element of attachment to being the “Rescuer” that enables the Taker to continue their dysfunctional behaviors (e.g. substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, abusiveness, etc.) as the Giver inadvertently shields them from the results of their dysfunctional behaviors. If this dynamic is not interrupted, the Giver eventually becomes exhausted, frustrated and burned out, in need of the support, healing, and self-awareness provided through therapy. I offer free zoom seminars, which give you a taste of how I can help with relationship issues. Please feel free to call for a consultation: 301-229-8000.

Is most of your time spent worrying about and taking care of others? Does it feel almost impossible to share what's really on in your mind because you fear being rejected? Do you experience feelings of guilt or shame when you think about doing something just for you? If you are ready to find freedom from the feelings of guilt and shame that are holding you hostage, counseling can help. You can learn to make yourself a priority while having relationships that are nurturing and supportive. You know that you "should" be taking better care of yourself and stop letting others take advantage of your kindness. But whenever you think about it you feel lost and overwhelmed, unsure of where to begin. Together, we will work through the feelings of guilt, shame, and fear that are keeping you from being able to honor your voice. We will work through your mental/emotional blocks so you can learn to "trust your gut" again. You will learn how to create healthy boundaries in your relationships so you can say "yes" or "no" to things with confidence. Hockessin, Delaware therapist: Dr. Berkeley Antonioli, licensed clinical social worker
Codependency

Dr. Berkeley Antonioli

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, PhD, LCSW, LCSW-C, MEd
The majority of my training and clinical work has been focused on helping adults recover from early traumatic experiences. Often, the traumas my clients are working through is rooted in early relational and/or sexual experiences that leave a lasting impact on their formative developmental years and beyond. I have found that these early experiences often impact how clients have learned to operate and survive in relationships. Many have learned to defer to others, feeling like a burden if they consider and try to communicate their needs or limits, which is the foundation of codependency. These folks have learned to betray themselves in order to preserve their attachments, often leading to resentment, burnout, anxiety and depression.

Atlanta, Georgia therapist: Mikela Hallmark, therapist
Codependency

Mikela Hallmark

Therapist, MS, LPC, LMHC
Codependency isn’t just about “losing yourself in a relationship.” It’s a survival strategy — often born from childhood environments where attunement, safety, or emotional permission were inconsistent or absent. In our work together, we gently unravel these patterns, not by labeling you as broken, but by honoring the intelligence of the parts that learned to over-function, over-give, and under-receive. I help clients build internal boundaries before external ones — learning to recognize where they end and others begin. Together, we practice new relational templates rooted in self-trust, emotional honesty, and reciprocity. This isn’t about becoming “independent” in a vacuum. It’s about reclaiming yourself without losing connection — perhaps for the first time.
