Ellicott City, Maryland therapist: Stacey Hellman, licensed clinical social worker
Grief

Stacey Hellman

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW-C
Sometimes a person is diagnosed with Depression but what is actually happening is a normal grieving response to a loss like the death of a loved one, divorce, illness, miscarriage or other significant event. If this is the case then we need to focus on learning about what "counts" as a loss, learning about the grieving process, and supporting the client through the ups and downs that come with it. People process losses in different ways and it's important for clients to be able to identify what their patterns are and what messages they have received from parents, religion and society about how to handle loss. Sometimes these messages really cause harm and make it nearly impossible for someone to go through all the necessary stages of grief in order to integrate the loss into their experience. When we go through a loss, it can be very difficult to think about anything else and it's common for people to engage in behaviors to try to numb emotions and avoid thinking about it. But when we avoid dealing with the loss, it doesn't just get better on its own; rather we just delay the grieving process and the repressed feelings can actually cause physical illness. Additionally, when we don't process and feel our emotions, it's impossible to actually enjoy life because we are spending a lot of energy avoiding feelings and trying to be numb. Part of my job in helping people move through grief is to give them concrete tools they can use to deal with their feelings in small chunks rather than all at once which is overwhelming.

I have worked with individuals (primarily adults) to help them manage aspects of loss and grief (neither of which is limited to death of a loved one) that are significantly impacting their functioning and well-being. I work with them to process their loss, and identify what it means to embrace the significance of the loss without letting that loss define them.

At our practice, we use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to help individuals navigate the challenges of loss and grief. Grief can bring overwhelming emotions, including sadness, guilt, and anxiety, which can sometimes lead to unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. Through CBT, we work with clients to process their loss, reframe negative thinking, and develop healthy coping strategies. Our approach is compassionate and structured, helping individuals move through grief at their own pace while building resilience. We focus on identifying and addressing distressing thoughts, fostering self-compassion, and finding ways to honor and adjust to life after loss. Grief comes in waves in many forms: death of a loved one/pet, ended relationship, lost job/financial status, changing life stages, unfulfilled dreams/expectations, & beyond. At times this can be overwhelming, even something that we try to avoid from the pain & dark places it forces us. Guilt for experiencing joy during grief can also be confusing at times. However, learning to actively process & manage ongoing grief is more than possible. Fort Collins, Colorado therapist: Margaret Graham, licensed professional counselor
Grief

Margaret Graham

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC, LCPC, LPCC
My work with grieving clients focuses on creating space for the full complexity of loss in all its forms—death of loved ones, relationship endings, loss of health or identity, and the life you thought you'd be living. Through compassionate, personalized approaches, we address key areas including the non-linear nature of grief, guilt and regret, anger and resentment, and navigating a world that expects you to "move on." I help clients honor their grief while finding ways to continue living, process complicated emotions including relief or ambivalence alongside sadness, develop language for what they're experiencing when words feel inadequate, and create meaningful rituals or practices that acknowledge loss while making space for what remains. My approach recognizes that grief isn't something to fix or get over—it's something to move through and integrate as part of your ongoing story.

Atlanta, Georgia therapist: Mikela Hallmark, therapist
Grief

Mikela Hallmark

Therapist, MS, LPC, LMHC
Grief isn’t a problem to solve — it’s a story to be honored. Whether you're mourning the death of a loved one, the loss of a relationship, a life path you didn’t get to live, or a version of yourself that no longer fits, grief has a way of touching every part of us. I work with grief gently, without rushing it or trying to "move you on." This is a space where you don’t have to be strong, positive, or put together. Where silence is allowed. Where your pain is not pathologized. Together, we explore what’s been lost — and what still lives in you. We make room for sorrow, anger, numbness, and even the moments of unexpected peace. Grief changes you. But it doesn't mean you're broken. It means you loved. And in that, there is something profoundly human and worthy of tending.

Bereavement can be an especially lonely experience as people navigate loss in the context of a death-phobic culture. Community care and ritual are often missing for people as they cope with the ongoing nature of loss. Depending on the nature of the loss, trauma processing therapy might also be helpful in supporting the bereavement process over time.
