Registered Psychotherapist, MA, Registered Yoga Teacher
Stress is an avoidable part of life but can have detrimental repercussions. We want to identify your stressors and help you manage them in a healthy way. I would help you confront your emotions and identify coping mechanisms that can help you. Stress is something that is held in both the mind and body. It would be crucial to become aware of how stress is held in your body and to be able to release it. By doing so, you will be able to increase your range of tolerance for stressors and develop a system that helps you manage stress in a productive manner.

While stress typically constricts our experiences, one aim of therapy is to find more freedom—to feel, connect, think, and act with more freedom and agency in your life. Oftentimes, there are unconscious narratives or patterns underlying our stress, making it hard to get unstuck. Stress is typically rooted in a mixture of external and internal pressures that can be hard to untangle alone. Stress symptoms may even be masking other emotions or needs. Talking with someone who's curious and attuned to the fullness of your experiences can reveal some of this. My hope is that this leads to alleviated and more manageable experiences of stress. It may also shift how you approach and make sense of your daily life.
In working with you around stress, I'll want to understand your unique experiences—including what helps or doesn't help. We all register and respond to stress differently. You may feel panicked, anxious, overwhelmed, shut down, numb, or burnt out. Stress might be impacting your sleep or making you physically ill. You might seem to thrive on stress—it spurs you into productivity!—but feel it takes a toll or keeps you from experiencing life more fully. As someone who works relationally, I'll be especially attuned to how stress comes up in your relationships, including your relationship with yourself.

We feel stress when life demands outstrip our ability to perform. It is a confusing emotion: a blend of apprehension, sadness, frustration and decreased motivation despite clear awareness of the importance of the issues at stake. Unfortunately we cannot afford avoidance -- it's like driving with eyes closed. Things are bound to get much worse if do that. But we can learn to distinguish between the initial response of stress (unavoidable pain) and stressing about stress (secondary emotion / useless pain). We can examine the assumptions that keep rumination, worry, resentment, vigilance and all the other such processes in place leaving us no room for rest. We can learn to compartmentalize by understanding the difference between the time for problem solving, the time for implementing our solutions and the time to simply rest and appreciate the calmer aspects of our lives. We learn to think of all our outstanding obligations as books on the shelf that we open as needed as opposed to balls in the air that will drop on our head the moment we take a little break. The techniques that I have described here are all rooted in cognitive behaviour therapy, especially stress inoculation training and metacognitive approaches that help us deal with cognitive attentional syndrome (the main culprit behind our inability to stop overthinking). Eventually we get to open our eyes, clean the windshield and manage traffic issues - problems - as they come.
