From a Gestalt and body-oriented perspective, anxiety is approached as a lived, moment-to-moment experience in the nervous system. "The Gestalt perspective is inherently relational.
Anxiety symptoms experienced in the body are understood as individual expressions of relational suffering (Roubal, Gecele, & Francesetti, 2013) when the individual’s process of contacting with other people lacks spontaneity and fluidity.
In such cases, the style of interpersonal contact is rigidly distorted by fixed relational patterns, and needs are not being met within relationships.
Relating to others and oneself according to a need to “do the right thing” could be one example of such distortions, narrowing the possibilities of experience and of creative adjustment (Robine, 2013).
The flow of figure/ground formation becomes disrupted, because the person fears taking risks to find creative ways
toward mutually satisfactory contact.
While the arousal is present, the organism is inhibited or even paralyzed.
In therapy, support is needed to transform anxiety into fluid and creative excitement.
The support comes from the therapeutic relationship, in which the needs of the client are recognized and validated.
In the safe therapeutic situation, the client’s inhibition is reduced and the arousal of her/his organism can be directed towards an expression of relationally felt needs.
A client's experience could then be:
“With the therapist I can risk being my way without judging it as right or wrong”.
The paralyzing anxiety is transformed into an excitement of discovering new creative ways of contact.
The client experiments with them first in the safe psychotherapeutic relationship and later also with other people
(Herrera, Mstibovskyi, Roubal & Brownell, 2018)."

Anxiety can feel incredibly isolating, but it's important to remember that you're not alone in this experience. Many people struggle with feelings of fear and apprehension, especially during challenging times. It's completely normal to feel overwhelmed, and recognizing those emotions is the first step toward managing them.
Finding effective coping mechanisms can make a significant difference. Techniques like mindfulness and deep breathing can help center your thoughts and bring a sense of calm. Cognitive behavioral strategies can also provide valuable tools to challenge negative thought patterns.
Don’t hesitate to reach out to your support system—friends, family, or professionals—who can offer understanding and assistance. Sometimes, just sharing your feelings can lighten the load you’re carrying. You have the strength to face your fears, and with time and practice, you can regain a sense of control over your life. Your feelings are valid, and taking steps to address them is a courageous move toward healing.

Mary D'Agostino

Anxiety and fear can show up in many different ways, from constant overthinking and racing thoughts to intense fears that feel difficult to control or fully understand. These experiences can begin to impact relationships, work, sleep, confidence, decision-making, and everyday life, often leaving people feeling stuck in cycles of worry, avoidance, or emotional exhaustion. In therapy, we work to better understand the underlying patterns contributing to anxiety and fear while building practical tools to help you feel more grounded, regulated, and in control. I also incorporate EMDR therapy, which can be especially helpful in addressing fears and anxiety responses that feel deeply rooted, persistent, or difficult to shift through insight alone.

Anxiety often shows up alongside ADHD, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and over-functioning in the adults I work with — especially those with late-identified neurodivergence whose nervous systems have been on high alert for years. We slow down to understand what your anxiety is signaling, rather than just trying to silence it. Using IFS, DBT skills, mindfulness, and emotion-focused approaches, we build self-awareness and tools that actually hold up in daily life.

Anxiety and Fear can have many causes. You can explore this, find the root cause, and treat that. Fear-based thinking can come in many forms and can affect you in a variety of ways: feeling confident, trusting yourself, worrying, anticipating, feeling socially awkward and anxious. Fear can also happen in the form of phobias that develop over time. Phobias' role is to help you manage behaviourally what's going on for you emotionally. The problem is, it leads to unwanted outcomes.

Anxiety is our mind and body's way of keeping us safe; however it doesn't always come up when it's needed and can become disproportionate to our reality. This is when therapy comes into play. Seeking support for your anxiety will allow you to understand and have appreciation for the fears and worries, while also becoming confident in your ability to cope with it and continue living your life. When working on anxiety, you can expect to explore reframing thoughts, exposure activities, and an exploration of the feeling itself.
