Barbara Freedman
Licensed Mental Health Counsellor
The BPD and Trauma Connection Several trauma survivors have been diagnosed by other professionals with BPD , even though it is thought to be genetic in some cases. I have had extensive experience dealing with those who have been affected by this disorder due to the abuse or neglect they sustained during childhood. As a Mental Health Worker/Counsellor, on Ottawa's Victim Quick Response List for the past 9 years, I have successfully worked with over hundreds of Victim Service clients, in such areas as, child abuse, sexual trauma and exploitation including rape, incest, being sex trafficked, along with intimate partner violence.
Individuals with BPD reflect an attachment injury leading them to the formulation of implausible perceptions and conclusions about what other people’s actions and behaviors. Their distorted fashion of interpretation leads them to believe that they cannot trust anyone as this would only involve disappointment. As a child, when their caregiver did not show up for them, they tried desperately to adapt repeatedly, however were unsuccessful and learned that this involves too much energy and does not work. They continue to experience life as a child, as they have been left with these intense perspectives and overwhelming emotions which are turned up to maximum volume on much of what they feel. When these states become traits, they cause profound distress. Rejection sensitivity is a key feature of this disorder resulting in interpersonal difficulties, along with failed relationships characterized by extreme feelings of emptiness, abandonment, and lack of identity. All these behaviors further lead to the tendency for those around them to feel that they are walking on eggshells.
I often used both experiential inner child work in addition to Dialectical Behavior Skills to address the issues involved in this disorder.
The role of counselling for those with BPD is to start to uncover painful emotional wounds and feelings which they have disconnected from for years. Rather than sitting with and experiencing their feelings clients with BPD have been experts in covering, hiding, or dissociating from them. Interventions involving DBT-Dialectic Behavior Therapy includes skills training connected to Mindfulness, Emotion Regulation(Anger management), and Distress Tolerance, which is comprised of stress management, conflict resolution as well as cognitive behavior therapy.
While it has taken considerable time, I have helped many with this process through patience, understanding and validation of what they had been through. I help to provide light at the end of this dark tunnel .

Living with BPD can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. Deep connections, fear of loss, and intense reactions that leave you feeling misunderstood. Together, we’ll create a calm, supportive space to explore these feelings and the parts of you that work so hard to protect against rejection. Through IFS and psychodynamic therapy, you’ll learn to understand your emotions rather than fear them, develop steadier relationships, and begin trusting yourself again.

Angela Fawcett
Counsellor/Therapist, BSW, MSW, RSW
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is one of the most misunderstood mental health diagnoses, yet it is also highly treatable. People living with BPD often experience emotions intensely, making the world feel overwhelming and relationships feel confusing, dysregulating, or even frightening. Beneath these struggles is often a deep longing for connection, stability, and understanding. I draw on Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and other evidence-based approaches to help clients build skills in emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, self-compassion, and healthier relationship patterns. With the right support, people can learn to regulate emotions, build secure relationships, strengthen their sense of self, and create meaningful, fulfilling lives. Recovery is possible, and many individuals with BPD experience significant healing and lasting change.

Life can feel overwhelming when you’re carrying the weight of BPD on your own. My goal is to support you as I genuinely feel that everyone holds their own map to healing, however, many often need help navigating their path forward. Whether you’re also working on trauma recovery, healing from abuse, or working through the stages of grief, you don’t have to go through it alone. I am grateful to be that source of support for current and new clients. I help people create, enforce, and maintain boundaries that may have once felt impossible to implement, giving them space to feel safer, more empowered, and more connected to themselves and others. I work from an eclectic approach, believing there is no one-size-fits-all path to therapy. Together we can help you break free from limiting patterns and beliefs.

Registered Psychotherapist, RP, MEd
Therapy with those who experience the emotional intensity often connected with Borderline Personality Disorder requires a calm, steady presence and safe, nonjudgemental environment.
I focus on building a consistent, reliable therapeutic relationship where these clients can feel safe enough to explore their inner world at their own pace. I don’t rush insight or push for change before a person is ready. Instead, I offer a calm, grounded atmosphere that helps clients learn to recognize their emotions, understand their triggers, and develop a more stable sense of self.
Over time, we work together to create healthier patterns in relationships, strengthen emotional regulation, and build a life that feels more connected, meaningful, and manageable. My approach is gentle, consistent, and deeply respectful of each person’s lived experience.
