Saint Petersburg, Florida therapist: Michael Zamrin, licensed clinical social worker
Chronic Pain

Michael Zamrin

Licensed Clinical Social Worker, LCSW, MSW, MA
I have a strong interest in helping people reduce or eliminate chronic pain using evidence-based, mind-body approaches. I’ve completed a certification in Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT), a cutting-edge method for treating chronic pain, and continue to deepen my knowledge through advanced training in related mind-body techniques. These approaches are grounded in the understanding that, in many cases, chronic pain is not caused by structural damage or disease, but by neural circuits in the brain that become sensitized—often as a protective response to fear, stress, or unresolved emotions. This pain is very real, but it is what we call “neuroplastic,” meaning it can change. The brain can be retrained to stop sending pain signals once it no longer perceives a threat. Through education, emotional processing, and targeted strategies, I help clients break the cycle of pain and begin to reclaim comfort, confidence, and control in their bodies and lives.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania therapist: Dr. Kimberly L. Rehak, counselor/therapist
Chronic Pain

Dr. Kimberly L. Rehak

Counselor/Therapist, Ed.D., M.A., BCBA-D, CAC, BC-TMH, CCTP, THP, Practitioner/ Specialist.
From the time I was a small child, I was no stranger to being around people living in chronic pain and illness. I became very accustomed to caring for and assisting others experiencing physical pain. My maternal grandmother was diagnosed with cancer just before I was born. I went on to work in health care settings, including nursing and rehabilitative homes and centers, and continued to provide services to an aging population. I also have personal experience caring for a deceased spouse who suffered with cancer. This personal experience was far more educational than any advanced degree or training program with which I participated, in terms of understanding so many important factors involved in the treatment and care of those living with chronic pain or illness, as well as their families. Since that time (2008), I have worked with a number of clients individually, and their families, diagnosed with cancer and other terminal illnesses. Coupled with my early-on personal and professional learning experiences, this is a specialty area of mine that comes very naturally. Psychological pain and "disease" is also an area for which I am no stranger, in terms of experiencing the effects of secondary traumatization (vicarious traumatization). Often times those individuals who are not receiving the help and support they need may pass these conditions onto others, just like with physical communicable "dis-eases", causing others to experience these "states". It is so important that those surrounding these individuals are also provided the help, care, and support that is needed so it is not displaced onto others, who may fall victim to their outbursts or difficulties.

Understanding that chronic pain and illness affect not just the body but also the mind and spirit, we provide empathetic, holistic care designed to improve quality of life, enhance coping strategies, and foster resilience and hope. Compassionate Support for Managing Chronic Conditions * Holistic Approach: We recognize that chronic pain and illness can touch every aspect of life—physical, emotional, and social. Our strategies are comprehensive, addressing not just the symptoms but the whole person. * Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT is particularly effective in helping clients manage the impacts of living with chronic conditions, such as coping with pain, dealing with anxiety or depression, and adjusting lifestyle changes. * Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Incorporating mindfulness, meditation, and relaxation techniques can aid in reducing the stress response, which is often exacerbated in chronic conditions, and can help manage pain levels more effectively. * Pain Management Education: We provide education on pain management techniques and the relationship between emotional states and physical pain, empowering clients with knowledge and tools to better control their symptoms. * Support Groups: Facilitating access to support groups and community resources, allowing clients to connect with others who share similar experiences, fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support. Goals of Counseling for Chronic Pain or Illness Our aims in providing counseling for chronic pain or illness include: * Enhanced Quality of Life: Support clients in finding joy and satisfaction in life despite the challenges of their condition. * Effective Coping Strategies: Develop and reinforce coping mechanisms for dealing with both the physical symptoms and emotional stress of chronic conditions. * Emotional Resilience: Foster emotional resilience, helping clients to adjust to their situation, deal with feelings of grief or loss, and cultivate a hopeful, positive outlook. * Improved Self-Care: Encourage practices and routines that promote physical health, mental wellbeing, and self-compassion. * Strengthened Autonomy: Empower individuals to take control over their lives and make informed decisions about their care, reinforcing their sense of autonomy and independence. Our counseling services aim to provide a nurturing space where you can find the support, strategies, and strength to navigate your journey with dignity, courage, and hope. Chronic Pain

Carey Luker

Licensed Professional Counselor, LMHC, LPC
Living with chronic pain or a chronic illness can be incredibly draining, not just physically, but emotionally too. It’s hard carrying the stress of symptoms, appointments, fatigue, and the feeling that life takes so much more effort than it seems to for everyone else. Many people also struggle with anxiety, frustration, grief, isolation, or feeling misunderstood by those around them. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to minimize what you’re going through or hold it all together alone. Together, we focus on finding support, coping tools, self-compassion, and ways to make life feel a little lighter, more manageable, and more supportive of your needs.

Erin, Megan, Baillie, and Hannah all live with and work with clients who experienced chronic pain or illness. While everyone's experience is different and we do not assume that we fully understand your pain, each of us also understands that there is a certain element of chronic illness or disability that is hard to "get" unless you have experienced it yourself, firsthand. We aim to make therapy make sense for you and your life, not diminish or invalidate your reality.

I work with children, teens, young adults, and families coping with the emotional effects of chronic illness, including medical trauma and anxiety related to ongoing treatment or past hospitalizations. Living with a health condition can be overwhelming, and it is common to develop fears around medical procedures, separation, or loss of control. I provide therapy to help you or your child process these experiences, build coping strategies, and regain a sense of safety and confidence. I also support parents in navigating their own stress while learning how to respond in ways that ease anxiety and promote resilience.
