Lynchburg, Virginia therapist: Nathan Duff, licensed professional counselor
Serving Military / Veterans

Nathan Duff

Licensed Professional Counselor, M.Ed., LPC (CCTP, CYMHS, C-DBT, C-PD)
When you look for a therapist what they really bring to the table is the experiences they have seeing people in similar situations and the paths those people took to improve their lives. For background, I started my career in 96, provided residential treatment, worked as a school counselor and then moved into clinical work providing and supervising crisis services for 10 years. By the time I was licensed in 2016 I'd worked with every disorder in the book at some point. I started my own practice in 2019 and began focusing on various issues of emotional dysregulation particularly in ages 13 and up. I've done a lot of work with borderline personality traits, anxiety / OCD, depression and various forms of trauma (trauma certified CCTP) including sexual / military / Emergency Services. I'd say I have an unusually large amount of experience survivors of female sexual perpetrators, dissociation, depression / anxiety, co-dependence, and existential concerns—especially in teenagers or gifted teens navigating complex emotional landscapes.

Research shows that the most important factor in positive therapy outcomes is the therapeutic relationship between client and counselor; to this end, telehealth allows for clients to connect with a counselor who is a good fit for them, but might not be in their geographical location. The flexibility of telehealth also reduces the number of barriers for attending sessions, which means that clients are more likely to be able to keep regular appointments and make greater progress.

I am exclusively using a video platform to see clients. It began as a temporary measure during Covid 19, but has worked so well that I have completely transitioned to a virtual platform. Although it may seem like it would be uncomfortable, my clients are very appreciative of the flexibility it affords. There are definitely cases in which in person sessions is a better fit and more appropriate.
