Relationships are such an integral part of our lives! When we feel loved, appreciated and respected in our relationships, they are life-giving and wonderful. When however, relationships are strained, tensions are high, and communications have broken down, they can become a source of great pain, struggle and disappointment. Whether you are just starting out in your relationship and want to develop healthy communication and conflict management skills to carry you both forward together, or if you have been together for many years and hope to finally address some of those hot button issues, or simply want to deepen your intimacy and understanding of each other, I would be honoured to support you as you journey toward one another. When working with couples, I draw from an eclectic assortment of approaches including Gottman marriage principles, mindfulness and emotion focused therapies.

There's little more exhilarating than finding new love or devastating than the death of a relationship. You feel like you have tried everything but it just isn't working. You love each other and the thought of divorce is terrifying. You feel stuck, but you don't know what to do. I can help. I work alongside you to help you better understand where you are getting stuck and what to do differently. Together, we'll work to restructure problematic patterns of responding, and rekindle your connection. I use Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) in my work with couples. EFT is often referred to as the gold standard in couples therapy. The efficacy of the approach is well supported by research with over 90% of couples reporting increased satisfaction in their relationships. Additionally, the results have been found to be stable over time.

I have had many relationships well beyond the traditional kinds. I have worked with groups and individuals as a physicist, management consultant, mountaineer, pilot, project manager, CEO, student, teacher, counselor, and therapist. In addition, I've put much effort into being a parent, lover, partner, and, most importantly, as a child of a somewhat dysfunctional but "intact" family. It is a misnomer to focus on "relationship and marriage" as a unique situation. All relationships hang on the same dynamics of honesty, transparency, integrity, and commitment. All of these exist on a spectrum, and they are most tested and demand the most in our most important relationships. If you are weak in these skills in any relationships, then you are going to be weak in them in your most important relationships. In my experiences with couples and clients navigating relationships, personal integrity is always the key. It is up to you to decide where you draw the line in terms of commitment and disclosure, but do not expect great results in any relationship unless you hold yourself to the highest standards. Do not expect reciprocation even when you deserve it. In some sense, a good relationship is something you must define for yourself. The fundamental problem in most relationships is that you accept a low standard. You may have never had a role model who lived to a high standard, and you may not know how to achieve a high standard. I can help you become a better person but beware: there are reasons behind who you are and what you've become. You'll have to address these reasons before you can move beyond them. That is why relationship work is difficult. Ultimately, the ball is in your court. Are you ready to raise the bar?

The experience of emotional intimacy is one of deep trust, connectedness and satisfaction. It is about talking to your partner about what is going on under the surface for you at any given moment. It is about immediacy and transparency. It is about emotionally turning towards your partner instead of away when things feel hard and overwhelming. It is the ability to share your inner world with your partner in a way that leaves you feeling truly seen and heard. Emotional intimacy is achieved through learning, and practicing with intention, a variety of strategies that allow you to experience new ways of thinking about, and existing within, your relationship. The effort required to cultivate these habits is well worth it. Couples experience deeper connection, dramatically enriched physical and sexual intimacy and greater emotional fulfillment. What could be better than that? The reality is that many couples don’t know where to start. Michelle loves working with couples to begin the journey towards emotional intimacy, and enjoys helping them nurture it over time. Michelle specializes in helping couples become great communicators. She is passionate about helping her clients learn and implement the building blocks of effective, healthy communication. These include strategies for mindful listening, engaging with respect, achieving clarity, and finding the courage to be open. Mindful listening is all about the giving of one’s full attention and being utterly present in the moment. Engaging with respect involves maintaining full responsibility for one’s own thoughts, feelings and behavioural responses. This allows people to stay out of blame and past hurts. Tools for achieving clarity in communication include being specific about what you are saying and being honest with yourself and your partner about your objectives. The courage to be open requires embracing the habits of transparency, immediacy, turning towards one’s partner, and of course, healthy boundaries. Does this all sound a bit daunting? Yes, it does! Can you achieve this? Absolutely. Let Michelle show you how.

Relationship challenges can show up as communication breakdowns, recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, trust wounds, or feeling unseen or unheard within partnership. You may find yourselves stuck in repeating patterns, reacting from past hurts, or struggling to navigate life transitions together. I work somatically, trauma-informed, and with the nervous system, inner child, and energy field in mind to help uncover the deeper roots of relational dynamics and attachment patterns. My focus is compassionate, root-cause healing that supports greater emotional safety, clearer communication, and a more secure and authentic connection to yourself and others.
