Anxiety is not just a symptom, but often a response shaped by early experiences. In childhood, it serves as an attachment alarm, helping a child seek safety and connection. When these needs are not consistently met, this response can become internalized and persist into adulthood, even without immediate threat. Rather than suppressing anxiety, it can be understood as a signal pointing to unmet needs and experiences that require attention and care.

Fear is what stops us from doing things, moving forward in our life, and accepting changes. Avoidance is what we do when we are anxious or stressed. Finding ways to understand your fears and challenging the beliefs that stop you from moving outside your comfort zone can free you from anxiety.

Joanna Szczeskiewicz
Registered Social Worker, MSW, RSW
Anxiety takes on many shapes, from the physically overwhelming intensity of a panic attack to the never-ending questions that characterize generalized anxiety disorder. Whatever it's form, anxiety is maintained by the interaction between our anxious predictions (thoughts), attempts to escape or avoid our triggers (behaviours) and an almost chronic preoccupation with anxiety related symptoms (attention). Canadian Clinical Practice Guidelines recommend cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) as the first line of treatment for anxiety disorders. CBT helps us ensure that our thoughts reflect our reality and not our apprehensions, that our behaviours match our goals, and that our attention is directed towards what is effective instead of wandering way off into the future. Exposure-based interventions are central to CBT for anxiety. Exposure exercises teach us how to approach what we fear in a safe manner. After all the things that we avoid are often the ones that are the most important, like having that difficult conversation or studying for an exam. Procrastination has far more in common with anxiety than with laziness. Exposure-response prevention exercises help us eliminate needless precautionary behaviours like monitoring our physical states to predict the next panic attack or seeking constant emotional reassurance from people around us. Adding elements of mindfulness helps with rebuilding our focus and restoring our ability to do what matters. Overtime, as we prove our ability to cope, anxiety recedes into the background.

Phobias are irrational fears, meaning that most people do not react with the same intensity that you do to whatever you are afraid of. When you are phobic, the Fight or Flight Response set is initiated, which is a normal reaction, except when it is triggered and there is no actually no reason to be afraid. When this occurs, you need specialized help to reduce the anxiety you feel and the fears you experience.
