Breaking Through Mental Fog: How to Find Clarity When You Feel Stuck

Josh Dolin: Life Coach | Purpose Pathfinder

Ever feel like your brain is buffering? You know there’s something important you should be doing—some next step, some big decision—but it’s like trying to see through fog. Everything feels unclear, overwhelming, and just stuck.

You’re not alone. That mental fog? It’s real, and it has a sneaky way of keeping us from moving forward. But here’s the thing—clarity isn’t something you find. It’s something you create.

Step One: Get It Out of Your Head

Your brain isn’t a storage unit—it’s a processing system. The more you hold inside, the more cluttered it gets. Grab a notebook (or your Notes app) and start a brain dump. No structure, no rules—just write down everything circling in your head. The things you’re worried about. The things you should be doing. The things you want but are afraid to admit.

Now step back. What’s really in your way? Too many options? Fear of making the wrong choice? Lack of direction? Naming the block is the first step to breaking through it.

Step Two: Shrink the Problem

Big decisions feel impossible because we treat them like giant, single steps. They’re not. Every breakthrough, every shift, every major life change is just a bunch of tiny choices stacked together.

Want to switch careers? Start with one small thing—updating your resume, reaching out to one person, researching a job title. Want to work on self-confidence? Try saying one nice thing to yourself in the mirror every morning.

Momentum beats perfection. Always.

Step Three: Change Your Scenery

If your thoughts are stuck in a loop, move your body, move your space, move your mind. Take a walk. Drive a different route. Go to a coffee shop you’ve never been to. New surroundings spark new thoughts.

A shift in perspective starts with a shift in position.

Step Four: Borrow Someone Else’s Brain

Sometimes, we get stuck in our own heads because we’re too close to the problem. Talk to someone. A friend, a mentor, a coach—someone who can see your blind spots. They might ask a question that unlocks something you hadn’t even considered.

(And if you don’t have that person? I got you. That’s exactly what life coaching is for.)

Step Five: Make a Decision and Move

Here’s the deal—clarity comes from action. You don’t need to see ten steps ahead, you just need to take the next one.

So, what’s one tiny move you can make today?

Write it down.

Do it.

Keep going.

The fog clears when you start walking through it. 🚀
