I’ve been reflecting lately on my own journey and the journey’s other individuals share with me related to their bariatric journey. We go through the surgery or start the GLP-1’s and begin to lose the weight. We begin feeling a renewed confidence in ourselves that we haven’t felt for decades or maybe ever; then it happens…”you’ve lost weight! You look good!” A compliment that is meant to be acknowledge our success stops us dead in our tracks.
We begin to have that uncomfortable feeling all over our body and the racing thoughts…”this feels uncomfortable”, “I don’t feel that way about my body”, “so it was as bad as I thought before I lost weight and no one told me.” All of these confirm some of our worst fears. Our weight was as bad or worse than what we thought.
Along this journey, you may still be traversing the new relationship you have with your body. Experiences with body dysmorphia. Fears of reagain that cause us to push away or fear the compliments of our weight loss success. I understand. The best way to combat these struggles is to talk with someone who understands. If this resonated with you, I’d love to sit with you and create a space for healing so you can be the most confident, compliment accepting, version of yourself!
