Merging the lives of two individuals is no easy task and there is no such thing as a "perfect" mate nor relationship. Naturally this means that each relationship will face its share of hardships. I am a qualified therapist that is here to help you navigate through some of these challenges --- whether in the early stages of your relationship, preparing for marriage, or many years into your union. I do not take sides. In couples counselling I help couples rebuild and/or strengthen their sense of friendship and partnership, intimacy, respect and appreciation, ability to manage conflicts in a healthy and effective manner, heal through feelings of betrayal, understand one another's inner world, honour and support each other's dreams, establish a shared vision, and ultimately strengthen your sense of commitment.

We are hard-wired to be closely connected by relationships that fulfill and sustain us. I am trained to provide couple's counselling, with emotion focused couple's therapy. This approach helps both parties process thoughts and feelings and understand relational patterns that are unhelpful and need to be managed in a different manner. Couple's come in to address communication, how to reconnect, matters involving infidelity and trust issues. I work fairly with both parties so each person can feel heard and understood and supported in their session. I work with many types of couples - polyamorous, straight, LGBTQIA+ couples.

Relationships don't struggle because people stop caring — they struggle because the patterns we fall into can quietly erode the connection we're trying to protect. Drawing on the Gottman Method and Emotionally Focused Therapy, I help couples understand what's keeping them stuck, rebuild trust and intimacy, and develop the skills to navigate conflict in ways that bring them closer. Whether you're in crisis or simply want something better, couples therapy can be a turning point.

I specialize in helping individuals and couples create a second version of their relationship in these four areas of Relationship Transformation
Therapy is focused on helping couples find healing in creating a new version of their relationship.
Deciding to stay or go.
If you feel stuck in a miserable relationship, there is no need to exist there; life is too short. You may be struggling with the decision of whether to separate or not. I help each person uncover what is needed from themselves, and their partner, for the second version of the relationship to be a success. There is a focus on identifying patterns— both individually and as a couple— and being intentional in creating what it is each person desires and needs.
Deciding on how to separate
Perhaps the second version of your relationship is figuring out what peace and happiness look like during or after separation. People can accidentally find themselves engulfed in a battle after separation, sending their lives in a direction they never intended or wanted to go. Separation can be peaceful. Even in high conflict separation or divorce situations, peace is possible. Often when people skip separation or divorce counselling, the emotional aspects are ignored. I help people create a second version of their relationship, during or after separation or divorce. There is a focus on being intentional with what each person wants the relationship to look like in the future. Also focused on are specifics on how to create, sustain and maintain the second version of the relationship.
Please note these sessions can be done separately.
Also note if separation is decided, with the well-being of the future relationship in mind, topics such as custody and finances can be discussed. There is a focus on what is fair (not necessarily equal), and reasonable. Custody and financial documents can be drawn up to be used within mediation, or given to lawyers for a place to begin (saving time, money, and mental and emotional energy).
Reconciliation after betrayal
The second version of your relationship may be reconciling after one, or both, have stepped out of the marriage either physically, mentally, or emotionally. Perhaps one or both of you have checked out of the marriage, but now someone is considering a better way. There is. If you are wondering if reconciliation is a good idea, or how to move past betrayal, know that healing is possible. You will move on. You might as well move on intentionally with a focus on peace and happiness. I help people create a second, better version of their relationship after betrayal. There is a focus on identifying the patterns— both individually and as a couple— that got the relationship to where it is, and how to get it to where you want.
Deciding How to Co-parent
Every parent wants their children to be happy. Unfortunately, and often accidentally, people can put their children’s happiness to the side during separation and divorce, causing short-term and long-term damage. People can get caught up in their emotional whirlwinds and forget to keep their children’s peace and happiness at the forefront. I help people create co-parent relationships that work for their children and adult individuals.
* Please note co-parent and/or custody arrangements can be discussed and decided on within therapy. The paperwork can be drawn to be used with mediation or lawyer(s), and used towards the divorce and child custody agreements. This therapeutic process helps to ensure the emotional components are factored in and utilized along with the final legal arrangements and agreements.

“Relationships” come in all shapes and sizes and they can be difficult to form and maintain and even end. There are relationships with partners, potential partners, ex-partners, other partners, colleagues, bosses, employees, friends, family, extended family, neighbours — even distant relationships such as with acquaintances, business associates, your barber, your condo manager or landlord, etc.
Individual counselling can often assist with many kinds of relationships even though the other party or parties are not present in the therapy, as often when one person makes a change, the nature of the relationship can change too.
Some ways in which this can happen include:
Working on communication skills.
Learning to better understand ad cope with someone else’s behaviour that you find confusing.
Learning to respond in ways that are aligned with who you want to be.
Learning how to manage conflict (most people I talk to hate conflict!)
Exploring how you feel and think about your relationships so as to bring you some clarity.
Learning how to be more emotionally close to your partner.
Becoming aware of how past relationships of various types might be impacting current relationships.
And other ways.
If any of the above seems like it might help you and your relationships and well-being, contact me today for a free consultation. I would be delighted to speak with you about how I might be able to assist.
