Jennifer L Abel
Psychologist, Ph.D.
I use primarily exposure and response prevention (ERP). I've treated dozens of people with OCD. I've always been keenly interested in OCD. My review comparing SSRIs (anti-depressants that help OCD) and ERP was published in the peer reviewed journal Behaviour Research & Therapy. I found that ERP is more effective unless you are severely depressed or have poor insight. Most people with OCD, at some level, understand their fears are unwarranted but feel they can't stop and realize they have OCD. If this describes you then you are likely to respond well to ERP.

Emily Wilson
Marriage and Family Therapist, MA, LMFT
I work with individuals experiencing Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), including intrusive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, and anxiety-driven rituals, as well as pure “O” OCD where distressing thoughts occur without overt compulsions. In my experience, treatment approaches such as EMDR, in vivo exposure, imaginal exposure, interoceptive exposure, and Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) are highly effective for helping clients manage anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, and OCD. These evidence-based methods allow clients to safely confront distressing thoughts, sensations, and triggers while developing coping skills, reducing avoidance, and building lasting resilience.

As your therapist, I can help you understand the complex nature of OCD and develop effective strategies to manage intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors. Together, we'll work through evidence-based approaches like Exposure and Response Prevention therapy, creating a personalized plan to gradually face your fears while reducing anxiety-driven responses. I provide a safe, compassionate space where you can learn to recognize OCD patterns and separate yourself from the disorder's demanding voice. Aaron Kapin
Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, LMT
If you have diagnosed obsessive compulsive disorder that's actively disrupting your life, make sure you find a specialist to work with.
If you have a specialist, or your tendencies are more mild (i.e. not an active threat to your health and well-being), let's talk. Somatic Experiencing has the potential to help you track with the physical aspect of a compulsion, that is, instead of thinking about what the urge is, you feel what the urge feels like.
It's hard to believe it till you experience it, but once you can find the physical aspect of a compulsion and learn to track it with some curiosity, it has the potential to change more quickly than addressing the specifics of the compulsion itself.
Again, this isn't a treatment for an OCD diagnosis, but it can be a great supplement to treatment, helping you feel safer and more settled in your body as you navigate this.

Meghan McGinn
Psychologist, PhD
Is OCD putting a strain on your relationship? You’re not alone. Think of OCD as a relentless bully, constantly dictating how you should act—or else. But this bully doesn’t just target you; it infiltrates your relationship, too. Your partner may feel pressured to follow certain behaviors dictated by OCD, and over time, that pressure can turn into frustration or resentment. When your partner pushes back, it might feel like hostility toward you. Now, you’re not only struggling with intrusive thoughts and anxiety but also the pain of feeling unsupported or blamed in your relationship. If this is your experience, working with a couple therapist that fully understands the nature of OCD is essential. Couple therapy can help you and your partner to develop a shared understanding of how to best respond when OCD shows up, so that you are united in taking a stand against this bully, rather than letting it come between you.

Dr. Stephanie Vaughn
Psychologist, Psy.D., DBT-LBC™
Exposure and Response Prevention (EX/RP) is the way to go, here. Did you know that there is such as thing as "Pure obsessive" or "Pure O" OCD? Not all OCD involves behavioral compulsions such as counting or hand washing. Some of it is mental compulsions only! Unless you're a true expert, diagnosing OCD can be extremely difficult. Misdiagnoses can be dangerous and costly.
