Emotional abuse is not considered a crime. No one gets arrested for this kind of abuse. The victim has to show bruises and lacerations for an investigation to occur. Clever abusers and predators know this. Rather than beating the body of their victim, they will work with their minds, gaslight them and continue to distort their belief in their own perception of reality. The worst of emotional abuse is that the victim can feel hopeless, abandoned, misunderstood and even worry about being crazy. Denver, Colorado therapist: Dr. Elizabeth Coldren, psychologist
Emotional Abuse

Dr. Elizabeth Coldren

Psychologist, PSYD, PSYPACT
I work with adults who have been in relationships where their feelings, needs, or perceptions were dismissed, minimized, or used against them. Emotional abuse can be subtle and hard to name, especially when the relationship also included care, love, or periods of calm. You might relate to feeling confused about what was “real,” wondering if you were too sensitive or overreacting, replaying conversations in your head, or changing your behavior to avoid criticism, withdrawal, or the silent treatment. For many people, these patterns started young, in families where you had to stay tuned in to other people’s moods, keep the peace, or be “easy” so things didn’t get worse. Experiences like this can leave a long imprint: second‑guessing yourself, feeling responsible for other people’s emotions, bracing for criticism even when nothing is wrong, or working hard to stay acceptable so conflict doesn’t escalate. You may find yourself feeling small in relationships, even when you are competent and grounded in other areas of your life. Over time, these patterns can shape your sense of self, your nervous system, and what you believe you are allowed to expect from others. In our work together, we make space for what you went through and how it lives in your body and relationships now, and we explore what it means to move forward with more clarity, self‑trust, and choice.

Emotional Abuse

Maggie Reynolds

Licensed Professional Counselor, LCPC, EMDR Certified, NCC
Emotional abuse can leave lasting wounds that no one can see, but you feel every day. It often leads to self-doubt, feeling “never good enough,” second-guessing yourself, and living on edge trying to keep others happy. I know from personal experience how confusing and painful it can be to make sense of what you lived through, what you were told about yourself, and how you were treated. Healing is possible. In therapy, we’ll work to understand the dynamics of emotional abuse, why it happens, and how it impacts your nervous system, identity, and relationships. Most importantly, we’ll focus on helping you reclaim your voice, rebuild self-trust, and set boundaries that support healthier connections moving forward.

Making sense of trauma, and the impact of trauma, can be accompanied by the fear that you will never be able to overcome the distress you feel when you remember the experience or when those intrusive nightmares, flashbacks, and negative thoughts come crashing into your awareness. Through trauma-focused therapy we reclaim confidence, hopefulness, intimacy, safety, self-esteem, and trust. I have specific expertise in treating trauma symptoms related to sexual assault, intimate partner violence and emotional abuse, military sexual trauma (MST), childhood and complex sexual trauma, violence, and combat trauma experienced by Veterans. These experiences can impact physical health, and daily life. Many people will experience a form of trauma in their lives. Trauma can come with feelings of shame, anger, and confusion. Posttraumatic stress is a normal human reaction to traumatic events. However, for some individuals this stress persists and interferes with their ability to live the life that they want. I work with complex cases that sometimes include dissociation, numbness, anger, risky behaviors, and years of avoidance. The treatments I provide are the most powerful and effective treatments available for these conditions. I have expertise in individual, as well as relationship (i.e., with a partner) based trauma-focused therapies. I have experienced many times how these treatments help people gain new perspectives about what happened to them, develop a sense of empowerment over their trauma, and improve their lives. These treatments can also be helpful if you feel stuck following experiences of trauma, even if you don’t have PTSD. If you’re unsure whether you want to discuss your trauma, or unsure which approach feels like a good fit for you, we can discuss your concerns. We will explore trauma-focused care that builds upon your current support, coping skills, and personal experience. I primarily employ time-limited, evidence-based Cognitive-Behavioral Therapies (CBT) such as CPT, PE, and CBCT. (See Individual and Couples Therapy based Trauma-Focused Services.) In psychological literature, stressors are defined as events and conditions (e.g., losing a job, death of an intimate partner) that cause change and require that the individual adapt to the new situation or life circumstance. Stress processes can include the experience of prejudice events, expectations of rejection, hiding and concealing your authentic self, internalized homophobia, intimate partner violence, discrimination, and ameliorative coping processes that have become bad, ineffective habits. These experiences can be particularly painful when there is social pressure to conceal your experiences, or stigma. I address what it’s like to have no one to talk to about these experiences, and any distress that comes from having nowhere to do this work safely. I practice LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy that considers the impact of minority stress and chronic stress responses. Aside from these stress processes, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and heterosexuals who report any same-sex sexual partners over their lifetime, have greater risk of childhood maltreatment, interpersonal violence, trauma to a close friend or relative, and unexpected death of someone close.

Under the guise of trauma focused therapy, the more subtle and therefore sometimes most confusing aspects of emotional abuse can become critical to unwind and understand both in the context of past childhood experiences with immature caregivers, how these experiences can inform the choice of romantic partners later in life and how to move past these patterns and expectations to allow for growth and freedom from relationships that detract rather than add.

Probably emotional neglect or the lack of adequately nurturing is the least recognized and validated for of developmental or marital abuse. Looking at attachment style can often help you to understand how this neglect occurred and what you need to heal. Maybe negative thoughts intrude on your thought process. There are many approaches that work for this, depending upon your needs.

If you are unsure whether you have experienced emotional abuse, here are some things to indicate you may have been in an abusive relationship: Feeling constantly on eggshells around the person, Second-guessing your own thoughts, memories, and perceptions; Being made to apologize for the gaslighter's mistakes; Constant criticism and belittlement; Isolation from friends and family. As a psychologist specializing in the treatment of emotional abuse, my approach prioritizes creating a safe and validating therapeutic environment where individuals can explore their experiences and heal from the effects of abuse. Through trauma-informed therapy modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and trauma-focused approaches, I help clients process their emotions, challenge distorted beliefs, and develop coping skills to rebuild their sense of self-worth and autonomy. Additionally, I provide psychoeducation about the dynamics of emotional abuse and support clients in setting boundaries, enhancing self-care practices, and accessing resources for safety and support. Collaboration with other professionals, such as legal advocates or social workers, may also be integrated into the treatment plan to address practical needs and ensure holistic healing. Developing a close relationship with someone who displays narcissistic tendencies can result in trauma and pain. If you believe you have experienced narcissistic abuse from a parent, a partner, a friend, or another close entity, you may have noticed daily or near-daily dread, brain fog, panic, helplessness, and powerlessness. You may feel shame, self-doubt, and confusion alongside a tendency to blame yourself for all the ways this relationship feels wrong. You may feel that you’ve lost touch with your former confidence and vitality, as though both you and your world have shrunk under the shadow of this relationship. You may continue to feel deep longing and love for a person you know has harmed you. At PCT, we are here to validate and witness your journey to healing. We will work with you to address the acute emotional and somatic symptoms of narcissistic abuse no matter where you are in your healing process. We will cultivate compassion for all the parts of you that have emerged throughout this struggle. We’ll walk with you as you gather the pieces of yourself and put them back together. We will help you build a strong foundation that can’t be rocked, and a home in yourself where you can know peace and acceptance.

Roswell, Georgia therapist: Courtney Crooks, psychologist
Emotional Abuse

Courtney Crooks

Psychologist, PhD, CTMH, CCTP
Emotional abuse can negatively impact your physical and psychological well-being. Through brief or long term psychodynamic/psychoanalytic approaches using empirically-supported methods, I work with each patient to identify core themes and repetitions linked to their relationship patterns, including experiences of narcissistic or emotional abuse from an intimate partner or other person. Over time, this insight and reflection encourages the patient to become aware of relationship patterns, identify potential abusive relationship behaviors, enact desired changes to their relationship patterns, and ultimately gain a sense of personal agency over their life.

Unfortunately, more people that we would like to admit have suffered emotional abuse and it has affected their lives negatively. It is at the root of many issues that people come to me for, even if they don't realize it. When we do our initial detailed intake interview, these things quickly come to light. Hypnosis is a powerful tool for resolving or neutralizing past hurts and trauma. many of my clients have continued to suffer, even as traditional therapy has failed to give them relief. Usually, one or two sessions of hypnosis are enough to resolve their trauma and free them. As they emerge from trance, the change is visible as they seem lighter, happier, more relaxed, their faces smoother as the tension leaves their bodies.
