If you are feeling low, or depressed I can help you by integrating behavioural, cognitive and interpersonal approaches with relaxation, visualisation and guided imagery techniques. Contact me for a free consultation to feel more motivated, with a clear plan how to begin to solve your problems. Contrary to common belief, depression is not primarily a biological illness, inherited through the genes. Nor is it the setbacks, crises or tragedies in our lives that cause depression. It is our response to adverse events that determines whether we get depressed or not. Research shows that people most likely to suffer depression are those who react to adversity by taking it personally, seeing all areas of their lives as blighted by it, and the misery as going on forever. Depression is always a second and unnecessary problem, and just makes problematic circumstances worse. This is good to know because it means that, instead of feeling helpless or hopeless, people can learn to take back control over their lives. They may not be able to change certain circumstances but they always have options about how they react to them. The symptoms of depression include low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of appetite and energy, sleep disturbance, feeling agitated or lethargic, worthless or guilty, difficulty in thinking straight and having repeated thoughts about suicide. Antidepressant drugs may help some people because they lift levels of a ‘feel-good’ chemical in the brain; unfortunately, they do nothing to change the underlying circumstances or thinking patterns that led to the depression. Depression is always related to unmet essential emotional needs and that is why the human givens approach, which focuses on helping people in distress find healthy ways to meet their emotional needs, is so successful. Depressed people may seem deflated and flat but, in actual fact, they have raised levels of a stress hormone called cortisol, which means that they are in a state of constant high emotional arousal. When our emotions are aroused we can’t think rationally, so this is why people deep in the grip of depression can’t concentrate well or even make simple decisions. Learning simple relaxation techniques to calm themselves down will start reducing those cortisol levels. The main reason that depressed people are so emotionally aroused is that they spend a vast amount of time worrying about the future or beating themselves up about past events. Perhaps they still feel guilty about something that happened recently – or years ago; perhaps they are frightening themselves with dire ‘what if?’ scenarios (likely or unlikely), in which loved ones encounter dangers or they themselves lose their jobs or their homes; perhaps they feel beaten down by chronic pain or anger (“Why did this have to happen to me?” “How could he have been so cruel?”); or maybe they experience a combination. They also have a huge tendency towards negative thinking – “I’ll never be good enough”; “I’ll never cope”; “nothing ever goes right”; “the pain will only get worse”. All this kind of negative imagining and thinking saps an enormous amount of energy – and makes people utterly miserable. Far from feeling more refreshed after a night’s sleep, most people with depression wake up next day still exhausted and feeling totally unmotivated. It is hard for them to get out of bed and do anything at all. We now know why this happens. Psychologist and co-founder of the human givens approach Joe Griffin carried out research over many years which showed that, when we dream at night, we are discharging unexpressed emotional arousals from the previous day. If earlier we were upset about something our spouse did or didn’t do, but kept it to ourselves, we would later dream that out, perhaps in the form of getting angry with someone else (dream content is never straightforward); that would have the desired effect of lowering our levels of emotional arousal, so that we can start next day afresh, even though we are unlikely to remember we had the dream. (If we did express our feelings with our spouse at the time, we wouldn’t need to dream about it. And, of course, if we wake up and remember what our spouse did or didn’t do, we may get emotionally aroused about it all over again, requiring more dream discharge that night, if we still don’t resolve it.)

Therapist, MBchB, MRCpsych, MSc psychological therapies
The Black Dog is what Winston Churchill called it. A disorder that causes immense suffering. The scientific evidence is that talking therapy is as good at treating depression as medication. The difference is of course that you don't have side-effects and the gains you make in therapy last you a lifetime. With medication when you stop taking it, the effect obviously stops too. I would like to meet with you to see what can be done to help you. This will enable us to get to know each other and see if we can work together. It’s important for you to work with someone you trust and feel safe with.

Working in a trauma informed way means actively resisting re-traumatisation whilst understanding the root cause of my client's depression. We assess your strengths and coping mechanisms, building a therapeutic relationship. I may use some CBT tools in order to identify and challenge any negative thought patterns and beliefs which may be stemming from past trauma - and replacing them with healthier, more balanced thoughts. Working with a body-oriented approach which focuses on releasing trauma stored in the body may be helpful as well as learning how to regulate your nervous system. Mindfulness and meditation techniques are often useful with this. Ultimately ensuring continuity of care by providing you with resources and referrals for additional support if this will be helpful and is required.

Licensed Professional Counsellor, MA, CCC
Depression isn’t laziness or weakness—it’s a signal from parts of you that feel exhausted, hopeless, or unseen. If you're feeling numb, unmotivated, or like you’re moving through life in a fog, I see you. Depression often arises when parts of us carry heavy emotional burdens or feel like they’ve been carrying the weight of the world for too long. Using Internal Family Systems (IFS) and somatic tools like TRE, I help you gently connect with these parts—not to fix or force change, but to understand, unburden, and heal. There is a way back to energy, purpose, and joy. You don’t have to do it alone.

Depression isn't sadness. It's exhaustion. It's going through the motions while feeling nothing. It's knowing you should care about things but not being able to feel it. It's functioning on the outside while being completely disconnected on the inside. Some people describe it as numbness, others as a heavy weight they can't shake. Either way, it makes life feel pointless even when objectively things are fine. That disconnect is what we need to understand. Depression often isn't about what's happening now—it's about patterns that got laid down years ago. We work to understand where the disconnection started, what purpose it served then, and why it's still running now. Then we can start changing it. This isn't about positive thinking or forcing yourself to feel better. It's about understanding why your system shut down, and gently helping it come back online.

Psychologist, BSc MPhil CPsychol AFBPsS
In modern society, the word depression is used to describe experiences ranging from low mood and sadness to a complete inability to function. Depression can manifest as extreme fatigue, cognitive dysfunction and suicidal thoughts. Statistics tell us that one in six to a quarter of us will suffer from mild to severe depression at some point in our lives. Mild to severe depression can last from a few days to many years. Often there are no clear-cut manifestations of the depression that outsiders can observe, and this compounds the problem because people don’t understand what you are experiencing. No two people’s experience of depression is exactly the same, and it can be very difficult to understand why the symptoms are even present much less what to do about it. Having experienced depression firsthand, I know what the experience is like and how debilitating it can be. I have now successfully treated sufferers of depression for over 20 years and have drawn heavily on my personal experience and the lessons it taught me. Depression symptoms can manifest themselves in many different ways and can also increase gradually over time making them harder to detect in the early stages. The symptoms can be wide-ranging and the symptoms can appear to be constant and relentless. Your symptom experiences may well include: low mood hopelessness lack of motivation confusion and a sense of being lost or stuck loss of appetite, weight loss, or weight gain cognitive dysfunction – ‘brain fog’, inability to concentrate and memory loss sleep disturbance loss of pleasure and interest in life agitation fatigue and lack of energy suicidal thoughts weakness aches and pains Loss of libido I’d like to be very clear, we often think that when we experience symptoms there is something wrong with our brain. While this can be the case, a more useful way of looking at symptoms for the condition of depression, is that your body is seeking to get your attention, to let you know that something is not quite right. You are NOT broken, your body is working perfectly normally, it is simply alerting you to the fact that you’ve become disconnected from YOU and something needs to change. Opening up to a new understanding and making that change is well within your own capability.

London, England therapist: Rakan Himadeh, somatic experiencing practitioner
Depression

Rakan Himadeh

Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, SEP, ISP Candidate
Depression often reflects a system stuck in freeze or collapse, and SE and ISP together offer a gentle path back toward aliveness. SE works with the body’s shutdown response by reconnecting you with small impulses, sensations, and moments of vitality, helping the nervous system slowly move out of immobility. ISP adds emotional integration by building capacity to stay with feelings like heaviness, sadness, or numbness in a safe, tolerable way. Together, they support a gradual return of energy, emotional movement, and a deeper sense of connection to yourself.

Depression

Ruth Mark-Roland Psychotherapy

Registered Psychotherapist, Post Grad Diploma in Psychotherapy, Foundation and Diploma in Group Analysis
I offer support for depression, including feelings of low mood, emptiness, exhaustion, hopelessness, and disconnection from yourself or others. Depression can often feel like being “stuck,” emotionally flat, or unable to access motivation or pleasure in life, and it may be accompanied by self-criticism, withdrawal, or a sense of isolation. My approach is grounded in psychoanalytic and relational psychotherapy, which allows us to explore not only current symptoms, but also the underlying emotional and relational patterns that may be contributing to how you feel. Together, we may look at early attachment experiences, loss, trauma, and internalised beliefs that shape your sense of self and emotional world. I also integrate somatic awareness to help you gently reconnect with your body, especially when depression feels numb or disconnecting. This can support a gradual return to emotional awareness, grounding, and vitality. Psychoeducation may also be used to help you understand depressive states and how they affect both mind and body, reducing confusion and self-blame. Where appropriate, I may incorporate EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques / tapping) to support emotional processing and regulation of the nervous system. Therapy is collaborative and paced according to your needs. We work together to help you understand your experience of depression, make sense of its roots, and slowly build more connection, meaning, and resilience over time.

London, England therapist: Louise Perry, registered psychotherapist
Depression

Louise Perry

Registered Psychotherapist, IFS UKCP HCCP BAAT
I work with adults experiencing depression, including persistent low mood, loss of motivation, emotional numbness, or a sense of disconnection from themselves and their lives. Depression often develops in response to long-standing patterns, life events, or internal pressures, and can narrow perspective over time. My work draws on Integrative Art Psychotherapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS), offering ways to understand how depressive states are organised internally and what they may be responding to. Rather than focusing on quick solutions or positive thinking, the work centres on making sense of experience and gently widening possibilities. Sessions may involve conversation, creative exploration, or a combination of both, depending on what feels most useful.

Depression has different ways of being approached. Depression and Alexithymia can be what is found suppressed with or without anxiety and other co-occurring expressions. We can offer parts work, functional support, distance TCM integration, application of an intersectional model to address ongoing depression from abusive/oppressive impacts or stored impacts...Sometimes the co-occuring condition needs care and compassionate meeting, e.g. in cases of chronic health challenges. Sometimes a more creative approach brings folks back on line from depression. Since our focus is CPTSD care, we often work with depression from a parts perspective for the last 14 years.

Depression often involves a profound disconnection from the body - a flatness or numbness that makes even basic engagement feel effortful. This work doesn't ask you to feel more before you're ready. It works gently with what's present - however little that might be - and creates the conditions for aliveness to return at the body's own pace, rather than on a timeline that adds another layer of pressure. PS: For clients experiencing depression, I work outside the programme format - at your pace, without a fixed sequence or timeline.
