Clear Path Counseling and Wellness Center

Licensed Professional Counselor, MA. LPC
Brad provides trauma-informed sports performance counseling and sports psychology coaching for athletes seeking to improve focus, confidence, consistency, and performance under pressure. He works with athletes across multiple sports, including golf, basketball, soccer, baseball, ice hockey, swimming, tennis, and football, supporting both competitive and recreational performers. Many athletes struggle with performance anxiety, confidence blocks, inconsistency, fear of failure, difficulty performing under pressure, or mental barriers that interfere with reaching their full potential. These challenges can affect reaction time, decision-making, focus, emotional regulation, and overall performance outcomes. Brad takes a holistic, performance-focused approach to sports psychology, helping athletes strengthen mental resilience, improve concentration, regulate performance anxiety, and develop a more confident and stable mindset in competition. Therapy and coaching are tailored to the individual athlete’s goals, sport demands, and competitive environment. As an experienced trauma therapist and EMDR therapist, Brad integrates EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), mental performance strategies, visualization techniques, emotional regulation skills, and holistic coaching approaches to help athletes identify and reduce mental blocks that may interfere with peak performance. This can include working through past experiences, performance-related stress, or underlying emotional patterns that impact confidence and focus. Sessions may focus on building pre-performance routines, improving focus under pressure, enhancing recovery from mistakes, and developing a strong, consistent “competitive mindset.” Athletes also work on balancing training demands with mental and emotional well-being to support sustainable performance and prevent burnout. Brad’s approach is collaborative and individualized, helping athletes create practical mental strategies they can apply in training and competition. The goal is not only improved performance outcomes, but also greater confidence, enjoyment of the sport, and long-term mental resilience. With the right mental training and support, athletes can overcome performance barriers, unlock greater consistency, and compete with clarity, confidence, and control under pressure.

La Quinta, California therapist: Stuart Hellebrand, M.S., C.Ht., hypnotherapist

Stuart Hellebrand, M.S., C.Ht.

Hypnotherapist
Hypnosis is a valuable tool for those seeking a competitive edge in sports performance. I have been involved with sports performance improvement since the 1970’s through my work with sports competitors to include recreational golfers, collegiate middle-distance runners and swimmers, marathon runners, and others. Noteworthy, among my clients, has been a CIF track and field champion, a swimmer on Cal Berkeley’s 2X national championship team, a collegiate middle-distance champion, and a marathoner who successfully completed the Mount Everest Marathon. Addressing the performance aspects of sports through hypnosis complements physical training and can lead to breakthrough performances. My use of hypnosis works by reprogramming negative self-talk, empowering performance through affirmations and guided imagery, boosting confidence, and reducing anxiety. In that pre-competition jitters or fear of failure can derail an athlete’s mindset, hypnosis employs subconscious relaxation techniques and guided imagery to reduce cortisol levels and promote a calm composed state of mind, while fostering a winning attitude. Studies have shown the efficacy of hypnosis in sports. For example, a 2016 review in the International Journal of Sports Science highlighted significant performance improvements in athletes who used hypnosis compared to those who did not. Those who used hypnosis reported better focus, reduced pre-competition anxiety, and enhanced execution of skills after hypnosis sessions. In sports performance counseling, my use of hypnosis facilitates vivid mental imagery, allowing athletes to visualize successful performance. Research has shown that mental rehearsal can strengthen neural pathways, helping the body to perform as if it has already achieved the desired outcome. Using hypnotic relaxation to tap into an athlete’s subconscious allows the competitor to tap into their commitment to training, discipline, and goal achievement in a stress-free manner.

You had a good day. Work went well; you exercised; maybe even spent time with people you care about. Then you got home, noticed everything you had not done, opened your phone “for a minute,” and disappeared into comparison, research, or another plan to improve your life. By bedtime, the day no longer felt like enough. I work with thoughtful, driven folks, often ADHD or ADHD-ish, who look capable from the outside but feel restless, scattered, disconnected, or chronically behind. You may be successful and self-aware, yet exhausted from constantly trying to fix yourself. My approach is practical and collaborative, grounded in contextual behavioral science. We look beneath procrastination, distraction, burnout, and indecision to understand how these patterns developed and what keeps them going. Therapy is not another performance test. It is a place to rebuild self-trust and act from what matters—not shame, fear, or proving. I do not offer a final formula for what your life should be. I can help you slow the machinery down, recognize the rules that have been running you, and take the next honest step without abandoning yourself. If you have built a life that should feel meaningful but doesn't feel like home, contact me to see whether we're a good fit. I do not offer a final formula for what your life should be. Psychologist, MA and PhD in Clinical Psychology
For 45 years, with great success, my professional colleagues and I have assisted athletes in all kinds of sports: basketball, baseball, fencing, football, bowling, golf, Aikido, Tai Chi, wrestling twirling, gymnastics, running, and more. We also work with whole teams for peak performance. Research shows that the Mindfulness and Visualization techniques, which I pioneered into the practice of psychotherapy 55 years ago, effectively assist athletic success. For example, by focusing attention on body mindfulness and centering, the athlete is better able to focus on peak performance in sports. In addition, players can regulate thoughts and emotions and personal problems that might distract. Imagery (creative visualization) can be used to improve performance and also to increase self-confidence. Research shows that athletes with higher athletic achievement tend to have stronger imaging abilities. With my guidance, such abilities can be developed, practiced, and ultimately much improved. Broadly speaking, Sport Psychology is defined as the study of the psychological aspects of any competitive, recreational, educational, or health-related physcial activity. I offer free monthly Zoom workshops where I facilitate a balanced state of mind using Mindfulness and Guided Imagery techniques. My colleagues are other licensed therapists and sportscasters! Great athletes train their bodies — champions train their minds. Sports psychology unlocks the mental edge that separates talent from greatness. Pressure, fear, and self-doubt can sabotage performance, but mental mastery transforms them into fuel for focus and confidence. Through visualization, emotional control, and belief training, athletes learn to turn setbacks into comebacks and nerves into power. The goal isn’t just to win — it’s to perform with freedom, clarity, and joy. When your mind and heart align with your purpose, your potential becomes unstoppable. Every victory begins in the mind — and greatness follows where belief leads.

Mental rehearsal is a core tenant of my approach to hypnosis. My motivational and success-oriented outcome hypnotic programming uses a lot of future goals visualized along with elevated emotions to mentally/emotionally rehearse the desired outcome. The subconscious responds to feelings and images very strongly and this is why so many are able to manifest what they desire, it is through mastery of this hypnotic method. We may rely on pineal gland breathing to change our chemical makeup in minutes from a low-frequency emotion to an elevated state.

Psychologist, PsyD, LP
As both a clinical psychologist and someone deeply embedded in sport culture, I work with athletes navigating both performance goals and mental health concerns. Sports psychology is not only about optimizing performance under pressure, improving focus, or strengthening confidence. It also includes addressing anxiety, burnout, identity struggles, injury recovery, depression, and the clinical needs that often go unspoken in competitive environments. I integrate evidence-based therapies such as CBT and ACT to help athletes regulate emotions, manage performance pressure, and build resilience while also attending to underlying mental health concerns. My approach supports the whole person, not just the athlete, so success is sustainable both on and off the field.

I am a clinical psychologist with specialized expertise in performance enhancement, drawing from my experiences as an operational psychologist in the U.S. Army. During my military career, I worked extensively with individuals operating in high-stress environments, helping them build mental resilience, maintain focus, and perform at their peak during critical missions. These experiences have given me a unique understanding of the psychological demands of high-pressure situations, which translates seamlessly into the world of sports and performance at all levels of competition. With advanced training in evidence-based approaches such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based techniques, I help athletes and performers optimize their mental game. Whether you're striving to overcome mental blocks, enhance focus, or build confidence, my goal is to help you unlock your full potential. Athletic performance breaks down between the ears before it breaks down on the field. Choke moments, performance anxiety, inconsistency under pressure these are subconscious patterns, not skill gaps. I work with competitive athletes to rebuild the identity they compete from: new pressure responses, new pre-performance baselines, and a nervous system calibrated for execution when it counts most.
