Franklin, Tennessee therapist: Dyani Saxby, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dyani Saxby

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP, DBSM
There is a difference between living with chronic pain and suffering with it. Suffering includes depression, unresolved grief, anxiety, isolation, and withdrawal. Chronic pain can cause these feelings because we grieve what we used to be able to do and feel that pain robs us of living a full life. Sometimes we feel like we lose ourselves entirely. When we are in a depressed or anxious mood state for a long period of time, we actually end up experiencing worse pain (and often worse sleep), which results in a vicious cycle that can feel impossible to break. The good news is that I have helped hundreds of patients improve how they respond to their pain and also lower their overall pain levels. They began to accept what they cannot control and also learn how to have more control over their pain levels through techniques such as physical pacing, relaxation, and clinical hypnosis. With board certifications in clinical health psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, and extensive training in clinical hypnosis, I can teach you skills to break the cycle of chronic pain and suffering.

Pain is so much more than a number on a Pain Scale. Your activity, your relationships, your thoughts, and your mood can all affect your experience of pain. Together we are going to examine all of the different things that make your pain worse. We will discover how you're daily activities and your beliefs around pain can fuel the cycle of pain. We will then develop tools to interrupt that cycle and do more with less pain. Please feel free to reach out to me to learn more about my approach to treating chronic pain.

Columbia, Maryland therapist: Ann Aspnes, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Ann Aspnes

Psychologist, PhD, ABPP
In treating chronic pain, I integrate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Chronic Pain (CBT-CP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to help you reclaim your quality of life. Together, we focus on concrete pain-coping strategies, including relaxation techniques and mindfulness, to quiet the physical stress response and alter how your brain processes pain signals. We also target distressing thought patterns like catastrophizing—which can amplify physical suffering—replacing them with grounded, empowering perspectives. Using ACT, our ultimate goal shifts from fighting the pain to building a rich, value-driven life alongside it, ensuring that chronic pain no longer dictates your choices, goals, or daily well-being.

Chronic Pain

Shelly Melroe

Marriage and Family Therapist, LMFT
In trying to resolve your chronic pain or illness, you may have exhausted options for medical solutions. At Rhythm For Living, Shelly will work with you to understand how pain and illness can be manifestations of trauma held in the body from early life experiences (including pre-birth, birth, pre-verbal), physical injury, or invasive medical procedures). She uses neural interventions that enable trauma to be discharged from the body to restore the healthy autonomic functioning in your nervous system, reducing experiences of pain and medically unexplained illnesses.

I work with many clients facing chronic illness and health challenges, including long covid, lyme disease, CIRS, cancer, infertility, and more.
