Franklin, Tennessee therapist: Dyani Saxby, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dyani Saxby

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP, DBSM
There is a difference between living with chronic pain and suffering with it. Suffering includes depression, unresolved grief, anxiety, isolation, and withdrawal. Chronic pain can cause these feelings because we grieve what we used to be able to do and feel that pain robs us of living a full life. Sometimes we feel like we lose ourselves entirely. When we are in a depressed or anxious mood state for a long period of time, we actually end up experiencing worse pain (and often worse sleep), which results in a vicious cycle that can feel impossible to break. The good news is that I have helped hundreds of patients improve how they respond to their pain and also lower their overall pain levels. They began to accept what they cannot control and also learn how to have more control over their pain levels through techniques such as physical pacing, relaxation, and clinical hypnosis. With board certifications in clinical health psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, and extensive training in clinical hypnosis, I can teach you skills to break the cycle of chronic pain and suffering.

"Mindfulness" is now successfully used as behavioral therapy. In psychotherapy, "mindfulness" is now successfully used as behavioral therapy. Mindfulness means to direct one's attention deliberately and not judgmental to the conscious experience of the moment. The patient learns to pay attention to the body functions such as breathing in the course of psychotherapy and deals with a positive purpose in life. In this way he perceives the "negative" things or the illness as no longer so impairing and directs his thoughts towards health. As examples one can mention the syndrome of restless legs: Patients experienced the painful "leg fidgeting" after performing the mindfulness exercises as no longer so impairing. The integration of "mindfulness" is particularly helpful in the treatment of depression. Apart from "mindfulness", probably more elements of psychotherapy can be used to focus on health and physical recovery. A polarization between academic medicine and mental Healing is not useful. Rather, a simultaneous application of common medicine and spiritual healing to improve the state of health and the course of patients' disease. I would therefore like to call for this, to cooperate even more closely between the disciplines in the medical and complementary medicine sector.

Kingston, New York therapist: MJB Wellness LLC, hypnotherapist
Chronic Pain

MJB Wellness LLC

Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapist and Coach, Certified Sexological Bodyworker, Sex Educator, Certified Reiki
I have made Chronic Illness and Pain a specialty in my practice and I have trained with some of the leading experts in that area. I have worked with many chronic pain sufferers, often eliminating all their pain even when it has been a long standing problem. As far as illnesses go, I have been able to eliminate all the symptoms of a client who was suffering from Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a degenerative neurological condition related to ALS or Lou Gehrigs disease. When I first met him, he had been degenerating for 12 years, was confined to a wheelchair, could no longer speak, drooled constantly, suffered from tremors and repetitive movements, inability to sleep and he lacked motivation to do his physical therapy, the only treatment doctors could offer him. With no treatment or drugs for his condition, doctors expected him to die soon most likely from choking as he lost control of his swallowing. After one session, we stopped the tremors and repetitive movements, got him to sleep more soundly and do his PT. After a second session he was able to speak again and walk again. After 5 sessions one couldn't even tell he was sick and now 6 years later he is still gardening, walking his dog, hiking in the mountains. Soon after I worked with a gentleman who had developed an adult onset form of Muscular Dystrophy called Myotonic Dystrophy. Only 45 years old, he suffered from severe chronic fatigue, finding himself unable to get out of bed in the morning, taking hours to stand up. He had muscular pain and rigidity, painful joints and various digestive issues. The morning after our first session, he woke up full of energy and jumped out of bed. After a few more sessions we eliminated all his physical symptoms as well as clearing several emotional issues that had plagued him his whole life. Recently he contacted me to update me and report his still feeling good. I have also worked with clients with MS and Parkinsons> This past year I trained and certified in treating IBS and other gut conditions, learning a protocol which is considered the most effective treatment for these issues. I have also trained and certified in Hypno-Oncology, enabling me to support patients on their Cancer journey to deal with pain, anxiety, and the effects of treatment such as nausea. Recently, I worked with a woman with stage 4 lung Cancer. Her only hope was a new experimental protocol that involved a long needle inserted into the stomach. She had a lifelong needle phobia and was terrified. After the first grueling treatment she came home and cried and vomited for 3 days. After one session she went in for her second treatment and she was able to laugh and sing show tunes with the nurses throughout the treatment, felt no pain and went home calm and relaxed.
