If you've been told you have a personality disorder—or suspect you might—you've likely spent years feeling misunderstood, stigmatized, or blamed for patterns you don't know how to change. These aren't character flaws; they're trauma responses that became your survival blueprint. Once we've built trust, we'll explore how your early experiences shaped how you see yourself, others, and relationships. You'll receive deep understanding for the specific symptoms you struggle with—the emotional intensity, the relationship chaos, the identity confusion. Through compassionate modeling and support, you'll learn new patterns, regulate what feels uncontrollable, and discover that change is possible. You're not broken; you're surviving.

Victoria, British Columbia therapist: Lincoln Stoller, counselor/therapist
Personality Disorders

Lincoln Stoller

Counsellor/Therapist, PhD, CHt, CCPCP
From my work with people both functional and dysfunctional, and from the perspectives of conscious and subconscious intentions, I believe we are composed of multiple personalities that alternatively control us in reaction to our environment. That being said, the crucial link between how we think and how we act is how we perceive. Personality disorders are a combination of distorted perceptions and inappropriate reactions. After all, it's your behavior that determines how you're seen. Your behavior is a map of how you perceive and interpret. Your behavior is a symptom, not a dysfunction. This is why I object to cognitive behavioral therapies that considers normal behavior to be the goal, and anything that makes others see you as normal to be a success. This is a bandage over an unhealed wound. It is nearly impossible to change your personality unless you want to. Even then, your habits and attachments present roadblocks. It takes real commitment and a creative vision to drop old patterns and incubate new ones. And when I say "creative," I mean that you have to reinvent yourself. You will need skillful and unbiased support from someone who is not attached to your past and present. It is a fundamental truth that you cannot appreciate change before you understand it. You will need to become your own warrior, advocate, and politician in beating back old urges, compulsions, regrets, and injuries. Memories are not the truth, and memories change as you become less reliant on them. All of this happens below your cognitive behavior, reasoning, and established patterns. You can change your personality. What now appear as disorders are compensations for twisted habits, injured memories, learned perceptions, and unconscious triggers. You can change these if you want to. Find enough love for and faith in yourself to do what is essential in the long term. Drop your coping strategies and aim for something greater than what you can see.
