New Moon Psychotherapy
Registered Psychotherapist, MA, MACP, MSW, RSW, RP, RP(Q)
People who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or other gender or sexual minorities often experience challenges that cis-gendered and heterosexual folks do not. These challenges may impact family, work, and social and intimate relationships. These include:
- Coming out: considering, preparing and processing
- Self-love and self-acceptance
- Processing related traumas: ie. bullying, discrimination, oppression, and homophobia
- Navigating complex family dynamics
- Exploring gender and sexual identity
- Exploring gender identity and sexual identity while in a relationship
- Career and workplace challenges
- Dating and marriage
- Body image concerns related to transitioning and gender identity
- Integrating cultural and religious identities
- Exploring polyamory, sex and kink
- Sexual health concerns/HIV/serodiscordant relationships
We also support family members who want to support their loved one and to process and accept their loved one's gender and sexual identity.
At New Moon Psychotherapy we understand the unique difficulties that come with diverse identities and intersections. Our therapists have specialized training and some have lived experience in the LGBTQ2S+ community. This offers a unique perspective and affirming, inclusive, and stigma-free support. We value the diversity of human identities and the fluidity of sexual and gender expression.

I am a cisgender female with experience working with people in the LGBTQ+ community. I am a compassionate and accepting listener and make an effort to ask questions so I can understand your experience, rather than assume. While I am familiar with common challenges LGBTQ+ people may have, I also believe we are each unique and have our own experience. I will work with you to identify your goals and mutually agree on the therapeutic approach that works for you.

Barbara Freedman
Licensed Mental Health Counsellor
I have offered LGBT clients my guidance and support through all stages of their transition process. In addition to being on the Quick Victim Response List for Ottawa Victim Services , my work with “The Well,” (a drop in day shelter for woman and children), along with my role as a Distant Counsellor on Presto Experts - (On-line Chat & Phone Counselling) afforded me the opportunity to work with many LGBTQ issues. The process of counselling this group has involved psychoeducation, along with reframing the discussion to a natural aspect of human diversity-along a continuum. I feel that my role in addition to normalizing clients' feelings, is to counsel them regarding the range of treatment options along with their implications. I have explored these members inner conflicts including those of internalized oppression. . One must understand their own internal process to be able to explain these to others. I have often heard the words echoed "How can I possibly explain this to other people when I cannot even explain it to myself." Self awareness involves discussing ones feeling brought on by guilt, and shame for wanting to be themselves and includes discussing fears of coming out . Resolution of these internal struggles allows them to further grow and develop their self identity. Self -understanding has an enormous impact on self actualization and identity reformation as well as managing intra-external conflicts. Having a stronger sense of self helps the individual better stand up to such conflicts posed by a non accepting family, work, or society.
A further task in helping the LGBT community is to be instrumental in assisting them in finding social support. Connecting with others, especially those in groups with similar emotions and issues is essential to belonging, and to decrease isolation.
I look forward to working with more LGBT clients to watch them grow and develop their unique self identity.

Kitchener — often referenced alongside Waterloo as part of the Waterloo Region — is at the center of Canada's most significant technology hub outside Toronto, home to the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, and dozens of major tech startups and scale-ups, creating persistent demand for therapists who work with innovation-sector burnout, high-stakes career pressure, and the psychological costs of startup culture. The region's growing immigrant population from South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East adds cultural diversity to therapy demand that the private therapy community is still catching up to reflect. Grand River Hospital provides institutional mental health resources alongside an active private therapy community. Kitchener's rapid diversification — beyond its German-heritage Oktoberfest identity — shapes a dynamic and evolving therapy culture.
