Does stress feel like a constant background presence rather than a temporary state? You might feel overwhelmed by responsibilities, have difficulty resting, or notice that your mind never fully switches off. Chronic stress can show up as physical tension, exhaustion, irritability, or disrupted sleep. Over time, living in this state can take a toll on both emotional and physical wellbeing. Therapy can help you understand how stress has become embedded in your system and explore ways to create more balance, capacity, and care — without adding more pressure to “manage it better.”

We feel stress when life demands outstrip our ability to perform. It is a confusing emotion: a blend of apprehension, sadness, frustration and decreased motivation despite clear awareness of the importance of the issues at stake. Unfortunately we cannot afford avoidance -- it's like driving with eyes closed. Things are bound to get much worse if do that. But we can learn to distinguish between the initial response of stress (unavoidable pain) and stressing about stress (secondary emotion / useless pain). We can examine the assumptions that keep rumination, worry, resentment, vigilance and all the other such processes in place leaving us no room for rest. We can learn to compartmentalize by understanding the difference between the time for problem solving, the time for implementing our solutions and the time to simply rest and appreciate the calmer aspects of our lives. We learn to think of all our outstanding obligations as books on the shelf that we open as needed as opposed to balls in the air that will drop on our head the moment we take a little break. The techniques that I have described here are all rooted in cognitive behaviour therapy, especially stress inoculation training and metacognitive approaches that help us deal with cognitive attentional syndrome (the main culprit behind our inability to stop overthinking). Eventually we get to open our eyes, clean the windshield and manage traffic issues - problems - as they come.

Stress is a normal response to life's demands, and especially in today's society, it's becoming more and more common. But chronic stress has very negative impacts on both your mental and physical well-being. Behavioural symptoms of stress include eating more or less, sleeping too much or too little, with drawing from others. Physical symptoms of stress include but is not limited to aches and pains, nausea or dizziness, chest pain or rapid heart rate. Emotional symptoms of stress includes but is not limited to feeling overwhelmed, loneliness and isolation, anxiety, depression. Therapy can help you find healthy coping mechanisms to the stresses that come with life. Getting rest, learning to relax, exercising, and connecting with people are only a few of the many ways.

Some stress can be positive however as the level of stress increases in one’s life it can become overwhelming. Stress may lead to difficulty sleeping, feeling fatigued, mood swings, body aches, etc. Experiencing high levels of stress may have a negative impact on one’s relationships. There are many sources of stress in our lives. Whether it is from relationships, work pressure, health issues, financial problems, family discord or other issues, stress can wear you down. When left untreated stress can cause anxiety and depression. While some stress is good, too much can lead to exhaustion and overwhelm. This is harmful because it can cause you to withdraw, disengage or turn to other coping strategies as a way to manage the stress. Finding answers to stress is key. Sometimes just talking about it can make a big difference. Reach out today to learn more about how we can help you address the stress in your life.

Explore the biggest culprits of ongoing and chronic stress, and begin to build the skills that are necessary to effectively manage stress. Stress is a part of life and cannot be erased, and our bodies are designed to withstand acute stress. However, chronic and ongoing stress (the kind that is harmful to our well-being) is often caused by trauma, lifestyle, certain long-standing behavioural patterns, and a lack of effective skills in communication, coping, and emotional regulation. We will look at all of these areas to explore where change might be helpful, and to begin to learn the necessary skills and tools to manage difficult thoughts and feelings effectively, respond to the challenges of life while taking care of your own needs, and increase emotional resiliency as well as behaviours that will promote vitality.
