Chronic Pain

Nour Counseling

Counselor/Therapist
Living with chronic pain or illness is not just a physical experience—it impacts your energy, your identity, your relationships, and how you move through daily life. Many people find themselves navigating medical systems that feel dismissive, confusing, or exhausting, while also trying to keep up with responsibilities that don’t adjust to their reality. There can be grief, frustration, isolation, and the ongoing pressure to “push through,” even when your body is asking for something different. Cultural beliefs about health, productivity, and worth can make this even harder, especially when your experience is minimized or not fully understood. At Nour Counseling, we take your experience seriously. We work with you to understand how chronic pain or illness is affecting you—not just physically, but emotionally and mentally—and help you build ways of coping that are actually sustainable. This might include pacing, boundary-setting, navigating medical interactions, managing uncertainty, and finding ways to stay connected to yourself and your life even within limitations. We also make space for the systemic and cultural factors that shape your experience, so you’re not carrying that context alone. This work is about supporting you in creating a life that feels more manageable, more aligned, and more compassionate toward your body as it is.

Marietta, Georgia therapist: Cheryl Boucher, licensed professional counselor
Chronic Pain

Cheryl Boucher

Licensed Professional Counselor, LPC
Pain Reprocessing Therapy offers hope for people who feel trapped by chronic pain and exhausted from searching for answers. It helps you understand how the brain and nervous system can keep pain going, even when injuries have healed, and teaches you how to retrain your brain’s response to pain. As you begin to calm the brain’s pain alarm system, it becomes possible to relate to your symptoms with less anxiety and greater confidence and trust that your body is okay. For many people, this work creates space for real change, less suffering, more freedom, and the chance to recover the life pain has taken from you.

Chronic Pain

Carey Luker

Licensed Professional Counselor, LMHC, LPC
Living with chronic pain or a chronic illness can be incredibly draining, not just physically, but emotionally too. It’s hard carrying the stress of symptoms, appointments, fatigue, and the feeling that life takes so much more effort than it seems to for everyone else. Many people also struggle with anxiety, frustration, grief, isolation, or feeling misunderstood by those around them. My goal is to create a space where you don’t have to minimize what you’re going through or hold it all together alone. Together, we focus on finding support, coping tools, self-compassion, and ways to make life feel a little lighter, more manageable, and more supportive of your needs.

As a psychologist specializing in chronic pain and illness, my treatment approach focuses on addressing the psychological, emotional, and social aspects of living with ongoing physical symptoms. Through a combination of therapies such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), and mindfulness-based interventions, I collaborate with individuals to develop coping strategies and improve quality of life. By helping clients understand the mind-body connection and challenging negative thought patterns related to pain, we work towards building resilience and fostering a sense of control over their condition. Additionally, I support clients in navigating the impact of chronic pain on relationships, work, and daily functioning, while promoting self-care practices and advocating for holistic healthcare approaches. Roswell, Georgia therapist: Alan Brandis, Ph.D., psychologist
Chronic Pain

Alan Brandis, Ph.D.

Psychologist, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist
Typically, Chronic Pain Syndrome patients come to see a psychologist after being seen by a number of other health professionals to no avail, including internal medicine physicians, orthopedists, surgeons, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, emergency room doctors (for late-night injections of powerful pain killing drugs) and others. Typically, a Chronic Pain evaluation consists of several approaches to discovering which factors play the largest role in maintaining the pain. We ask patients to keep a Pain Diary for a week or two, which helps us pinpoint which activities or emotional states are related to an increase in pain level. This also helps us observe how they are actually taking their medications. We may also perform psychological testing to determine any underlying causes of depression or anxiety which should be treated in addition to the Chronic Pain and which could be helping to maintain it. At least one Family Session is held to explore whether there have been unconscious payoffs within the family for being in pain.

Washington, Washington, D.C. therapist: Bold Expressions Therapy, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Bold Expressions Therapy

Psychologist, Psy.D.
For individuals with invisible chronic illnesses, hiding your pain all the time becomes exhausting. With a chronic health issue, you don’t get to choose when you’re in pain and when you’re not, and as such, I keep my cancellation policy flexible so that I can best support you. There is often a great deal of shame surrounding chronic illness, and significant stigma as well, both from the medical community and society at large. This can lead to depression and anxiety, both medical anxiety and social anxiety. I want to work with you to ensure that your chronic illness does not completely shape your mental health. As someone who suffers from a chronic pain condition, I am understanding and aware of the unique challenges that diagnoses such as fibromyalgia, Ehlers-Danlos, Dysautonomia, arthritis, and cancer have on an individual’s personal, romantic, and professional life. My goal is to help each patient understand and accept these diagnoses and work together to manage both the physical symptoms as well as the mental turmoil that can occur while trying to live life in an able-bodied world.

At Olive Tree Psychology Clinic LLC, we understand that chronic illness and persistent pain are not just physical experiences, they impact every facet of your life, from your emotional well-being to your relationships and cultural identity. We empower you to regain a sense of agency, even when your body feels unpredictable. We provide a space to process the grief of health changes while teaching practical mindfulness and coping techniques to improve your quality of life. Whether you are navigating a new diagnosis or managing long-term conditions, our goal is to help you live a full, values-driven life that isn't defined by your symptoms.

Franklin, Tennessee therapist: Dyani Saxby, psychologist
Chronic Pain

Dyani Saxby

Psychologist, Ph.D., ABPP, DBSM
There is a difference between living with chronic pain and suffering with it. Suffering includes depression, unresolved grief, anxiety, isolation, and withdrawal. Chronic pain can cause these feelings because we grieve what we used to be able to do and feel that pain robs us of living a full life. Sometimes we feel like we lose ourselves entirely. When we are in a depressed or anxious mood state for a long period of time, we actually end up experiencing worse pain (and often worse sleep), which results in a vicious cycle that can feel impossible to break. The good news is that I have helped hundreds of patients improve how they respond to their pain and also lower their overall pain levels. They began to accept what they cannot control and also learn how to have more control over their pain levels through techniques such as physical pacing, relaxation, and clinical hypnosis. With board certifications in clinical health psychology, behavioral sleep medicine, and extensive training in clinical hypnosis, I can teach you skills to break the cycle of chronic pain and suffering.
