Even when I treat individuals, so often we end up doing a form of relationship counseling, because we ARE our relationships. The people in our life affect us, and learning how to set boundaries and communicate differently is always a part of my treatment. Of course, this is easier when I get to work with both members of a couple (or family), in that I can then "hear both sides of the story." I am able to "speak" both male and female languages, so I find I can aid in translating and getting everyone to feel heard. (As a male therapist, this defuses some of the hesitation many male partners have about approaching therapy).

A great number of marriages can be saved by the couple or even one of the relationship going to therapy. We bring allot of history into all of our relationships and that needs to be sorted out. We need to work on the communication patterns, behavioral patterns and learn to be interacting in a productive way. There is a challenge to learning to disagree in a healthy way and have the trust that you can be honest with your partner without fearing the relationship will suffer.

Relationships & Couples Therapy: The Courage to Connect
Moving from Conflict Loops to Secure Attachment
Relationships are the primary "systems" we inhabit, and when they are in distress, every other part of our lives—our work, our health, and our parenting—feels the impact. With over 20 years of experience and specialized training in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), I help couples move beyond the surface-level "who said what" to address the deeper attachment needs that drive your conflict.
Deconstructing the "Cycle"
Most couples find themselves stuck in a "negative dance" where one partner pursues and the other withdraws. We work together to identify:
The Pursuit-Withdraw Loop: Understanding how your partner's shut down might be a survival strategy for overwhelm, and how your "pushing" might be a desperate bid for connection.
Rejection Sensitivity & Attachment Trauma: Addressing how past wounds and childhood attachments "show up" in your current arguments.
The Impact of External Systems: Using Systems Theory to explore how social constructs of power, gender roles, and even spiritual expectations influence your dynamic.
A Specialized Clinical Framework
I offer a sophisticated, research-backed path to relational repair:
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): Considered the "gold standard" for couples, EFT helps you de-escalate conflict and create a "secure base" where you both feel seen, safe, and valued.
Discernment Counseling: For couples on the brink of divorce or separation who aren't sure if they want to repair or uncouple. I provide a structured, neutral space to gain clarity.
Intensive Repair for High-Conflict: Integrating EMDR to process individual traumas that are leaking into the relationship and fueling chronic volatility or burnout.
For the "Professional" Couple
I have a "special love" for working with healers, pastors, and therapists in relationship. I understand the unique burden of maintaining a "public image" of a healthy marriage while struggling in private. I provide a confidential sanctuary where you can drop the "expert" roles and focus on the raw, human work of loving one another.

Relationships are a part of life but not something most of us receive any guidance or education in. Many people have any idea of the type of marriage they would like but no actual experience or example of how to make that work. Therapy can help you identify your personal and joint values and create the narrative of the relationship you want. Therapy can also help you identify stumbling blocks to that narrative and how to overcome them from an authentic and genuine place rather than avoidance. Many people believe "improved communication" is the key to fixing a marriage, and while this is important I also find that many couples communicate a lot but struggle with empathy, emotion tolerance, perspective taking, and follow through. Lastly, not all relationships are meant to last and some remain together out of fear of divorce or being alone. We can process this possiblity if it applies to your relationship and navigate it together.

Relationships are special and take considerable work. It doesn't matter if you are seeking a therapist to help you early in your relationship before "stuff happens" or are trying to back up and address longer standing patterns, I can help you be a strong "Us". When working with relationships we are going to talk about ways to make you a team and help you improve the ways you talk with each other to increase your understanding. The Gottman's talk about "Masters" and "Disasters" - I can help you be the former.

Let’s face it: relationships can be both wonderful and terrible, providing us with the highest highs and lowest lows. If you spend any amount of time with a committed partner, feelings of disconnection, dissatisfaction, and a lack of resolution can show up. And such feelings indicate that both of you need to pay attention to what is happening so that you can successfully build trust and connection.
Whether you’re just starting out in your intimate partnership or you have made a long-term commitment to one another, it’s important that both of you learn how you came up against certain obstacles and what you can do to reconnect. But this can throw a wrench in your relationship maintenance for many reasons.
You are absolutely killing it at work and having to juggle the demands of your career, on top of friends, family, kids, and your relationship can be challenging. As a result, you may have noticed tension or resentment building, and your relationship is starting to feel more like that of two roommates rather than that of spouses or a long-term, intimate partnership. Or perhaps you two are running into consistent misunderstandings. Despite you giving it your best shot hoping to improve the situation, things seem to escalate and never get better.
So here you are now—in the same cycle of conflict and argumentation that never seems to resolve itself. Believe us, we at Therapie can relate! You two may be fighting constantly or freezing each other out in silence. And perhaps you’re beginning to wonder if you are still on the same page, with the same shared goals in mind.
But maybe you may find that none of this struggle applies to your relationship… at least not yet.
Perhaps you’re just trying to be proactive in creating the strongest bond possible as you plan your next steps together—steps that may involve living together, getting married, and starting a family. You may be in search of some objective guidance from a professional who can help you in setting and adjusting certain expectations. Or perhaps you’re simply interested in setting a stable foundation with your significant other so that, together, you can tackle the obstacles that will inevitably arise down the line.
Our hats are off to you, and your relationship is likely giddy knowing it is getting the attention it deserves! All couples, no matter the circumstances, can benefit from couples therapy in Nashville. And with our clinicians, you and your partner will find an open and empathetic space to explore the ins and outs of your relationship.

Having worked with hundreds of couples over the last 40 years, I have developed a set of beliefs or ideas which, if adopted, help to ensure that a relationship will last. One of the most important is: Arguing helps nothing, so don't do it.
I like to say that I never met the person who started the fight! When two people argue, each of them believes that he or she is merely reacting to something the other one did or said. Neither one believes that they started the fight; but it started somehow, didn't it?
It is better to be close than it is to be “right.”
Blaming each other for the argument is counterproductive. So is trying to change the other person's opinion. Most couples who argue, argue about whose perception is "correct," whose way of doing something is the "right" way, and so on. The only possible outcome of these arguments is that someone will be "right" and someone will be "wrong." Do you know anyone who enjoys being wrong? Most people will fight tooth and nail to avoid being "wrong."
Commitment is the Foundation of the Therapy
Commitment implies that you are in the relationship "come Hell or high water," barring certain behaviors your partner might do such as having an affair (although I have seen a number of relationships recover from those, too). Unless each partner believes that the other one is committed, they will not feel safe to take risks in facing, addressing and working out the real, underlying issues that affect the relationship.

You might be feeling more like roommates than partners—stuck in the same arguments, walking on eggshells, or wondering how things got so far off track. Maybe the spark is gone, trust has been broken, or the connection just doesn’t feel the same. Whether you're trying to repair, reconnect, or decide what’s next, you're probably craving clarity, honesty, and a way back to feeling close again. I can help. (Look at my practice details to see more about what it would look like to work together.)
