Julie Cochrane - Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) Therapist

Hypnotherapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, RTT-T, Rewind Therapy Practitioner, Integration Coaching
Trauma sits in the body and the subconscious, not in the rational mind. For working with traumatic memories, I use the Rewind Technique, an evidence-informed, content-free approach that allows the nervous system to discharge the residue of a traumatic event without requiring you to relive it in detail. This pairs well with RTT for updating the beliefs that formed inside or after the event. If you have a formal PTSD diagnosis or are in active crisis, please work with a trauma-trained clinician as your primary support. I work alongside other providers and am happy to coordinate where appropriate.

Kyle Davies

Psychologist, BSc MPhil CPsychol AFBPsS
Trauma is the buzzword is the therapeutic world at the moment, and about time too. Trauma research has shown that trauma in early life can contribute to a host of mental and physical health challenges throughout our lives and needs I adapt a somatic, psych-spiritual approach to trauma rather than a cognitive approach. We heal trauma through the body, by reconnecting with the body and learning to feel safe with our feelings and emotions.

Dr Aneliya Gonsard

Psychologist, DClinPscy, MSc, BA
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are unfortunately way more common than many people think. A strong link has been found my many studies between ACEs and physical and mental health problems in later life. Traumatic experiences can also take place in adolescence and adulthood. For some, the impact is greatly distressing and life-limiting, such as in the cases of having post-traumatic-stress disorder. Many of the people I have come to work with have lived through often multiple adversities and traumatic experiences, throughout their lives. I offer a confidential space where we can think together about the way such experiences have affected you and the parts of you that can change and develop in order to integrate and move on from past traumas.

Both childhood trauma and that which comes from a recent shock can be immensely hard to live with. The good news is that you don't have to delve into old wounds or relive past events. Trauma is held in the body and it is through the body that it can be released. Sudeva is experienced in trauma work, he is a Certified Practitioner in Somatic Experiencing (Peter Levine's work) and has further trained in NARM, Attachment Theory and IFS.

The effects of trauma can be very distressing and shape how you think, feel, and relate to others around you. But trauma doesn't always lead to a diagnosis of PTSD. And you don't have to have this diagnosis to benefit from the counselling we could do together. I work in a trauma-informed way, prioritising your sense of safety and trust in our counselling relationship. And I can offer a space where you can relieve that sense of overwhelm, find your coping, and gently work through the experiences underlying the trauma. You're welcome to get in touch with any questions or to book a consultation to explore if I'm the right counsellor for you.

In many cases, but not all, a traumatic imprint leaves a following stress disorder, which sit in one's life until another force meets it and can change it. Developmental trauma from early childhood and also recent shock trauma, both can be hard to regulate on one's own. Nowadays trauma therapy offers many different ways and views to work through the body. The very good news is that you do not need to dive back into the trauma or its story but we can release the psychosomatic disorders from the soma of the body. Over the past 25 years I have thoroughly studied and also met some of the leading heads of trauma therapy. I am not certified for a professional hat but work in accordance with the insights of SE, Developmental Trauma, NARM, Poly Vagal Theory and IFS. My husband Sudeva is certified, if you prefer to work with someone who actually wears the professional hat, look at his profile here on Therapy Tribe.

Trauma isn't what happened to you—it's what's still happening inside you because of what happened. It's the hypervigilance that won't turn off. The flashbacks or nightmares. The way certain sounds, smells, or situations throw you right back. Your body holding onto something your mind is trying to forget. PTSD gets diagnosed when these symptoms meet clinical criteria, but plenty of people carry trauma that never gets labeled. Either way, your nervous system is still responding to a threat that's no longer there. That's what we need to address. I've spent 35 years working with adults carrying childhood trauma—abuse, neglect, households where you never felt safe. But trauma can also come from single events: accidents, assaults, losses. What matters isn't comparing severity—what matters is that your system got overwhelmed and is still stuck in that survival response. We work carefully and at your pace. I use approaches like Schema Therapy, IFS, Somatic Experiencing, DBT—whatever actually helps your nervous system understand the danger is over. This isn't about reliving everything in detail. It's about processing what happened in a way that lets your body finally rest. You're not broken. Your nervous system is doing exactly what it learned to do to keep you alive. We can help it learn something different.

It is so important to work on our trauma because healing and reclaiming one's life is possible. Find someone you feel safe with, who is compassionate and gentle. There is often a connection between childhood trauma and PTSD, so it is worthwhile to not only address recent events (if you are seeking help for a recent trauma) but also to explore any possible links to your past. I sometimes use EFT (tapping) to help clients with their trauma, along with other modalities. One of the challenges can be reconnecting with one's body and starting to feel safe in it again. If you suffer from flashbacks, it's crucial to process these memories and integrate them into your life story. You can learn different techniques for dealing with flashbacks and the overall anxiety and depression you may be experiencing. One major aspect of trauma is that it isn't only about what happened, but also what we made it mean about ourselves and the world. What kind of belief systems did we create to make sense of what happened, how others reacted to it, and how we tried to cope with it? We carry these beliefs forward and continue living according to them, potentially harming or limiting ourselves. This new belief system disconnects us from who we truly are and undermines our authenticity. To me, healing is about reclaiming your authentic self and living freely again.

We bring 14+ years of experience with complex trauma, dissociation care and recovery, memory reconsolidation and other neurodevelopmental care, attachmemt care and support... We specialize in CSAS - Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse, Colonial and/or Narcissistic/Trauma Recovery. There is a deep understanding of the internal and external affects of trauma recovery. Care providers are sometimes also survivors who have been through the recovery and have deep compassion for the process. We look at and work with intersectional issues of oppression. We also recognize many instances of socially derived trauma are intergenerational, lateralized and or oppressive and ongoing, clients are often addressing childhood, as well as, adult trauma from a non-self-shaming compassion based approach such as, Intersectional Care, Parts Work including TIST -- Trauma Informed Stabilization Theory, IFS -- Internal Family Systems; Somatic Work and distance CranioSacral; DBR, Polyvagal and Attachment Theory based approaches... non dominant handwriting, addiction care, memory reconsolidation and existential/coherence level care. We also integrate understanding of Transformative and Social Justice to bring awareness to internalized oppression that can keep survivors looped into dangerous experiences. We have a decolonizing orientation to care! This work is a special calling, during and post trauma recovery, folks may even feel more affirmed and move towards creative and fulfilling Self actualization in their process. Trauma can be caused by a specific event (like an accident, assault, or life-threatening event), a recurring event (like combat exposure or repeated abuse), or a developmental, childhood, or relational trauma (like physical or emotional neglect in childhood). Trauma can also be caused by many other frightening situations, such as bullying, abuse, rape, crime, war, victimization, and shaming/humiliation. You don’t have to live with symptoms of trauma and PTSD. Trauma therapy can help you get unstuck and return to feeling like yourself again. You can heal from trauma.

PHOBIAS, PANIC ATTACKS AND POST-TRAUMATIC STRESS The brain has an emotional alarm system designed to keep us safe. When people suffer from panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, it is because the system has gone into overdrive. What happens is this. There is a small, structure in the brain, known as the amygdala (Greek for almond, which is its shape), that has access to our emotional memories and learned responses. It evolved in the distant past and its job is to match new circumstances to what is already in the store and alert us to anything that previously represented a risk and might do so again. In the distant past, this might have been a movement or flash of colour that could have signified an approaching predator. The amygdala would then have triggered changes to help the body get ready to fight or flee the danger – pounding heart, racing pulse, quick, shallow breathing, etc. Now imagine this. A young woman, who has had a highly stressful day, is waiting in a long supermarket queue, worrying whether she’ll be out of the shop in time to catch the bus to school to collect her little girl. It is one pressure too many. The amygdala responds as if she is under threat and she starts to feel her heart pounding strangely and her breathing quickens. She becomes terrified that she is having a heart attack and that makes the symptoms escalate – her palms sweat; her chest feels as if it is bursting and she struggles to breathe. Soon she feels overwhelmed and may collapse or run out of the shop. The amygdala, fearful that this could happen again, files away the fact that there were bright lights and lots of people queuing when the ‘threat’ occurred. Then, when the woman is queuing in the post office the next day, the bright lights and queue may be sufficient for the over-vigilant amygdala to trigger another panic attack to deal with the new ‘threat’. Phobias start the same way – the amygdala makes associations with what was going on when a person first felt threatened, not all of which may be relevant. So, while it is understandable that someone who is attacked by a vicious dog may well develop a fear of dogs generally, it could equally be the case that someone develops a fear of broken glass because, on a previous occasion, when they had had a panic attack, there was broken glass lying near to where they collapsed. Agoraphobia develops when someone is too frightened of panic attacks even to leave the house. In the case of post-traumatic stress, someone who was in the back seat of a car when a collision occurred may find it frightening to travel in the back seat again but there may be other, unconscious, connections with the accident too, such as the smell of petrol. So the person may experience seemingly inexplicable panic when filling up their own car with petrol. Fortunately, human givens practitioners are taught a simple and effective way to deal with all these circumstances. If a traumatic memory is causing panic attacks, phobias or post-traumatic stress, they can use a powerful, painless visualisation procedure, known as the rewind technique, to take the emotion out of the memory and enable the memory of the event to be stored away as history, instead of as one that continues to intrude on the present. The memory remains, and always will remain, a deeply unpleasant one but no longer is it emotionally arousing. This method can work swiftly and reliably even in the most extreme of cases.
