Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Melanie Carey

Counselor/Therapist, LMHCA
Relationships often bring both deep connection and deep activation. Even in loving partnerships, it is common for couples to find themselves stuck in repeating patterns of conflict, distance, miscommunication, or emotional disconnection that can feel difficult to shift on their own. In therapy, we slow down these patterns and begin to understand what is happening beneath the surface of interaction. From a psychodynamic and attachment-based perspective, we explore how each partner’s early relational experiences, protective strategies, and emotional needs are shaping the dynamic in the present. Rather than focusing only on communication skills or surface-level conflict resolution, this work supports a deeper understanding of the emotional cycles that keep couples stuck — including pursuit and withdrawal patterns, sensitivity to rejection, shutdown responses, and unmet needs for safety, closeness, and autonomy. Using a trauma-informed and Focusing-Oriented approach, we also pay attention to the body-based experience of relationship moments. The “felt sense” can reveal important information about what is happening internally during conflict or disconnection, often before it can be fully put into words. Learning to notice and stay with these internal signals can create more choice, regulation, and empathy in real time. Therapy supports partners in developing the capacity to stay present with themselves and each other, even in moments of discomfort. This includes increasing emotional awareness, strengthening repair after conflict, and building more secure and responsive connection patterns over time. Carey Counseling offers support for individuals navigating relational challenges as well as partners in both traditional and non-traditional relationship structures, including polyamorous and consensual non-monogamous relationships. This work is especially supportive for couples who feel stuck in repetitive cycles, emotionally disconnected, or unsure how to reconnect after rupture — and who are seeking a deeper, more embodied way of understanding and transforming their relationship patterns.

Relationship and Marriage Counseling

Craig Springer

Psychologist, PhD
I recognize how central relationships are to one’s health and well-being. I also understand how painful it can be when we have difficulties establishing or maintaining relationships or when we have difficulties in a particular relationship. The ability to maintain harmonious personal connections is not necessarily easy. Because of its inherent difficulty, many people encounter high levels of relational stress and may even experience a complete cut off from others. The good news is that even though developing meaningful and healthy relationships requires a specific set of skills, which can be learned. Those who can improve their style of communication can bring about profound improvement in the level of closeness, support and satisfaction in their relationships and consequently experience greater happiness in their lives. I can work with you to provide the tools necessary to improve communication and establish more intimate connections. I begin by examining your patterns of interactions to determine what is causing or maintaining your interpersonal conflicts or leaving you feeling detached. Next, I will guide you through practices that will teach you how to improve your relationship style and connections with others.

Ms. Kurz has been working with couples for 15 years. Some couples make significant progress in 10-12 sessions, but others continue to seek on-going support. She is well-read and practiced in Gottman Institute literature and research (John and Julie Gottman) and attended their weekend retreat years prior. Relationships can feel especially challenging when your brain works in ways that don’t quite match what others expect. At Dr. Shoup’s practice, you’ll find a therapeutic space built around how you think: full of empathy, structure, and insight. Because we understand how intense focus, rapid associations, or lingering disconnects impact connection, we tailor couples and relational work to translate misunderstandings into deeper understanding, and build communication strategies that really work for your unique style. With support built around your perspective, you can move from friction and confusion toward connection and clarity.

Every relationship hits seasons that feel harder than expected. The distance that grows quietly over time. The same argument that never quite resolves. The sense that you're living parallel lives instead of a shared one. Struggling in a relationship doesn't mean it's broken. It often means something needs attention that hasn't had space to be heard yet. TWC's own Yvonne Roberto works with couples and individuals navigating relationship challenges — communication patterns, trust, intimacy, conflict, and the kind of disconnection that builds slowly and hurts deeply. Yvonne brings warmth, clinical skill, and a genuine belief that relationships can heal when both people are willing to do the work. If your relationship feels stuck, strained, or like it's lost something you want back — this is a place to start. If this resonates, we'd love to support you.
