There are a lot of factors to consider when choosing a therapist. Of course, their expertise and/or knowledge in the area in which you are struggling is certainly very important. But do not overlook the power of connection and rapport.
Establishing connection with your therapist is extremely important to the overall success in counseling, regardless of the issue and therapeutic strategy used by the therapist. For many people coming into therapy trust, empathy, being heard, are some of the issues many of my clients have shared with me, that have impacted them. Knowing you will be heard, not judged. Knowing your therapist is genuinely concerned, invested, shows warmth, and empathy, will make sharing and receiving feedback easier and more impactful.
Make sure you feel comfortable, accepted, heard, and feel a connection when choosing your therapist, and your therapeutic experience will most likely better experience for you.
Best wishes!!
