Depression is a complex and challenging condition that affects millions of people around the world. It can impact all aspects of your life, from your mood and emotions to your relationships and work. Depression can cause feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and despair that can be overwhelming and difficult to manage. It can also manifest in physical symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances, and changes in appetite. Dealing with depression is exhausting. It can feel like your wheels are turning but you are getting nowhere. Do you feel like you spend most of your time worried about the future or thinking about the past? Do you wake up feeling tired and groggy? Do things tend to strike you as black-or-white, rather than grey? If you are tired of waiting for yourself to 'snap out of it', I am here to tell you that even though changes in mood can appear to come out of the blue, there are often things going on beneath the surface that we can tackle and which can start to help you feel better. My passion is helping people from various walks of life who are feeling stuck, overwhelmed and irritable. We are interested in getting to know your experience of depression. Are you ready to get to know the depression better? We prioritize rapport-building and using a compassionate approach so that you feel safe as you explore the experiences and feelings that are coming up for you today. You are not your difficulties and so it is just as important for us to explore your goals, strengths and story as we tackle the challenges that you are facing. If you are looking for a compassionate therapist who cares not only about your difficulties, but also about how they developed and impact you, who is culturally sensitive and aware, and who will support your self-discovery, we would be honoured to be a part of your journey. Contact us today to schedule a complimentary consultation by phone where we can answer your questions. You deserve a meaningful and peaceful life.

Depression

Joanna Szczeskiewicz

Registered Social Worker, MSW, RSW
Depression is not just sadness. It might be an absence of emotion, a sense of numbness, a feeling of being stuck without a chance of changing anything within one’s life. When depressed, energy just seeps away. Sometimes things matter too much, leading the mind to rehearse past wrongs and mistakes. Sometimes things do not matter at all, leading to thoughts of suicide. Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) for depression unfolds in three steps. First, behavioural activation helps us get moving and appreciate the impact that even such small changes can have on the mood. Second, adjusting our automatic thoughts and assumptions can help us get free from painful overthinking. Finally, once we get moving a little bit and learn how to gain realistic perspective on things, we get to concentrate on deeply held life lessons (core beliefs) that make us distrust our ability to take care of ourselves and hinder our ability to create meaning in our lives. As we work on these three stages, we always pay attention to thoughts of suicide. We can only recover from depression if we stay alive. Initially, we do so by creating safety plans. As treatment progresses, life starts making sense again and thoughts of suicide dissipate.
