In my practice, I extend a compassionate and understanding hand to those experiencing social isolation, creating a space where they can feel seen and heard. Through the integration of holistic strategies like Mindfulness, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Role-Playing, I support clients in understanding the roots of their isolation and developing strategies to reconnect with the world around them. This tailored approach not only addresses the immediate feelings of loneliness but also empowers individuals to build meaningful relationships and enhance their social networks. Focusing on personal growth, self-awareness, and emotional resilience, we work together to overcome the barriers to social engagement, paving the way for a more connected and fulfilling life. Social Isolation

Melissa MacNeill

Counsellor/Therapist, RCC, CCC, Certified EFT Therapist, MACP
As humans we are wired to be connected, and to know that we can rely on important others for safety and comfort. When we reach for others in times of fear and uncertainty, their responsiveness, care and attention is soothing and helps to regulate our distress. We don't outgrow our need to feel loved, cared for, and held. The Covid-19 pandemic has only exacerbated the loneliness that so many were already feeling. I'll come along side to help you begin to reconnect and reestablish important relationships in ways that can lead to increased comfort, care, and love in your relationships.

Burnaby, British Columbia therapist: Nina Hopmeier, licensed professional counselor
Social Isolation

Nina Hopmeier

Licensed Professional Counsellor, Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)
Since we are by nature social beings, isolation from society can create feelings of loss, helplessness, and loneliness. Reasons for social isolation vary from person to person. In working together, we will explore what factors have lead to social isolation and how your current lifestyle may prevent you from creating a rich and fulfilling life. A fundamental part of therapy is also exploring the factors that maintain the social isolation. The therapy models that I apply largely depend on the unique history and relationship that the client has with social isolation. If social isolation occurs due to avoiding anxiety, I would primarily work with the Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) model and with the Emotion Focused Therapy model (EFT) in order to change your relationship to the uncomfortable feelings maintaining the isolation. If isolation occurs due to debilitating thoughts that create feelings of hopelessness and insecurity I would work with the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) model in order to help you challenge thoughts that prevent you from living the life that you want. If you are somebody who isolates socially I would be happy to work with you and devise a treatment plan that aligns with your unique needs.

Social isolation can be deeply painful—many attempt to dismiss or overlook feelings of loneliness when they arise. Past traumas often serve as the underlying reasons for isolation, as they provide a sense of safety. It may feel safer to be alone. If you find yourself avoiding social interactions, frequently canceling plans with others, or experiencing anxiety and panic in group settings, support is available. I've experienced similar struggles, received training, and can provide the support you need to navigate them.

Toronto, Ontario therapist: Sehr Athar, registered social worker
Social Isolation

Sehr Athar

Registered Social Worker, MSW, RSW
Social isolation affects more of us than we realize; it's a collective experience that we don't talk about enough, and that has been exacerbated due to the pandemic. Social isolation can also affect those of us who experience intersecting marginalized identities, whether we're from the BIPOC or 2SLGBTQ+ communities, and we've had to nagivate system oppressions our entire lives. Whether you're a student at university, an elder in the community, or someone who has recently arrived to Ontario from another place, we can work together to process the impact systems of oppression have had on our lives, work to connect ourselves in self compassionate way, and identify strategies to help us to feel part of the collective again. We'll develop a plan together and actively pursue tasks in between sessions to address these issues.
